Welcome, all of you to Hogwarts!
I welcome all of you to school!
Did you know that here at Hogwarts,
We’ve got a magical readathon? [video]
Sorry, couldn’t resist that opening. So now that we’ve all got StarKid stuck in our heads, let’s talk about the Magical Readathon!
I participated in the O.W.L.s portion of this readathon back in April (#TBR + Wrap Up), and now it’s time for me to complete my N.E.W.T.s! For all the information on the N.E.W.T.s (and the Magical Readathon), watch the video here: https://t.co/u7upaZx49c
I’m still planning on becoming a Magical Librarian! (technically the world magical isn’t in the job title, but it should be)(also technically it’s a very different job from muggle librarianship, but it’s still what I want to be!)
I completed all the O.W.L.s I needed to take in April (although not by sticking to my #TBR, which I’m always awful at), so now I need to get an O in Ancient Runes and E’s in Defense Against the Dark Arts and History of Magic to be a Librarian! I’ve planned out my #TBR with two options for each prompt this time, so hopefully I’ll have a better idea of what I’m going to be reading (even though we all know I’m going to change my mind).
And now without any further ado, my N.E.W.T.s #TBR:

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.
BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Emma Saylor doesn’t remember a lot about her mother, who died when she was ten. But she does remember the stories her mom told her about the big lake that went on forever, with cold, clear water and mossy trees at the edges.
Now it’s just Emma and her dad, and life is good, if a little predictable…until Emma is unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s family—her grandmother and cousins she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl.
When Emma arrives at North Lake, she realizes there are actually two very different communities there. Her mother grew up in working class North Lake, while her dad spent summers in the wealthier Lake North resort. The more time Emma spends there, the more it starts to feel like she is divided into two people as well. To her father, she is Emma. But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her.
Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well.
For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out?

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children, but both are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico’s son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.
On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or to give up everything she’s strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?

Non-stop all-you-can-eat buffets while marathoning her favorite TV shows (best friends totally included) with the smallest dash of adulting--working at the library to pay her share of the rent. The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she's asexual). Alice is done with dating--no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done.
But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!).
When her blissful summer takes an unexpected turn, and Takumi becomes her knight with a shiny library employee badge (close enough), Alice has to decide if she’s willing to risk their friendship for a love that might not be reciprocated—or understood.

Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters by Emily RobersonIn the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.
Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.
But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine"I'm not saying this is Sawyer's fault," the prim and proper one said delicately. "But."
Eighteen-year-old auto mechanic Sawyer Taft did not expect her estranged grandmother to show up at her apartment door and offer her a six-figure contract to participate in debutante season. And she definitely never imagined she would accept. But when she realizes that immersing herself in her grandmother's "society" might mean discovering the answer to the biggest mystery of her life-her father's identity-she signs on the dotted line and braces herself for a year of makeovers, big dresses, bigger egos, and a whole lot of bless your heart. The one thing she doesn't expect to find is friendship, but as she's drawn into a group of debutantes with scandalous, dangerous secrets of their own, Sawyer quickly discovers that her family isn't the only mainstay of high society with skeletons in their closet. There are people in her grandmother's glittering world who are not what they appear, and no one wants Sawyer poking her nose into the past. As she navigates the twisted relationships between her new friends and their powerful parents, Sawyer's search for the truth about her own origins is just the beginning.
Set in the world of debutante balls, grand estates and rolling green hills, Little White Lies combines a charming setting, a classic fish-out-of-water story, and the sort of layered mystery only author Jennifer Lynn Barnes can pull off.

Twelve-year-old Addie admires her older sister Meryl, who aspires to rid the kingdom of Bamarre of gryphons, specters, and ogres. Addie, on the other hand, is fearful even of spiders and depends on Meryl for courage and protection. Waving her sword Bloodbiter, the older girl declaims in the garden from the heroic epic of Drualt to a thrilled audience of Addie, their governess, and the young sorcerer Rhys.
But when Meryl falls ill with the dreaded Gray Death, Addie must gather her courage and set off alone on a quest to find the cure and save her beloved sister. Addie takes the seven-league boots and magic spyglass left to her by her mother and the enchanted tablecloth and cloak given to her by Rhys - along with a shy declaration of his love. She prevails in encounters with tricky specters (spiders too) and outwits a wickedly personable dragon in adventures touched with romance and a bittersweet ending.
So you may have noticed that I switched my prompts around for DADA. The original prompts were either not going to fit (if I’m reading on a kindle, I’m not sure what color the cover is under the dust jacket), or would drive me crazy (I tend to get really nitpicky about voice in my reading, so when something’s obviously British it throws me off), so I switched them! I’m calling it part of my Magical 504 Plan and saying that it was necessary to switch them so that I could complete my tasks. And now before I get onto a tangent about the need for special education at Hogwarts, let’s wrap this up.
As a reminder, to be a Magical Librarian, I need to get N.E.W.T.s in:
- Ancient Runes (O)
- A: Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins or Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
- E: The End and Other Beginnings by Veronica Roth or The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen
- O: The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall or Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee
- Defense Against the Dark Arts (E)
- A: Crier’s War by Nina Varela or We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
- E: A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan or Suggested Reading by Dave Connis
- O: Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann or Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
- History of Magic (E)
- A: Circe by Madeline Miller or Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters by Emily Roberson
- E: Kingsbane by Claire Legrand or We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
- O: Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes or The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine
That’s an O in Ancient Runes and an E in Defense Against the Dark Arts and History of Magic, but I’m hoping to get O’s in all three!
So that’s what I’m planning on reading! Are you participating in the Magical Readathon? Let me know what you’re planning to read (and what your Wizarding Career will be!) in the comments and have a splendiferous day!
