In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.

Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.

But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

No pressure.

A TL;DR OF MY REVIEW:

  • OH MY GODS I LOVED IT 💜💜💜
  • Is this science fiction or fantasy??? who cares I love it either way! 🤷🏻‍♀️
  • QUEER FOUND FAMILY!!! I am here for this!!! 🏳️‍🌈
  • HELLO YES i am in love with this cover!!! 😍

HELLO MY NAME IS KAIT AND I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!! Much like they did with their debut The Disasters, MK England has written a spellbinding, hopeful, and fantastically queer SFF adventure with found family at its heart. Spellhacker is a magical adventure through the dangerous city of Kyrkarta and beyond, and I loved everything about it- the snark, the hope, the magic system, the love stories, just everything.

Listen, I love stand alones because everything is tied up at the end, but I do kinda wish this had a sequel.

I LOVE this cover!!! (surprise, I know) The space gradients, the maz in the title, the tagline! Everything is just so perfect!

10/10 stars!!!

  • Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
  • Tarnished Are The Stars by Rosiee Thor
  • The Disasters by MK England
  • The Heist Society by Ally Carter

OH MY GOD!!! I View Spoiler » AT ALL and then I was completely blindsided by the View Spoiler » Although I was fairly certain from the beginning that View Spoiler » was suspicious. So at least I was a little right.

M.K. England is an author and librarian who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls small town rural Virginia home. Before that, they were an experimental music composer, a book store clerk, a concessions worker, a customer service punching bag, a teaching assistant, and many other things that will never be nearly as cool.

Megan is queer in both orientation and gender, uses she/her or they/them pronouns, and is a fierce defender of fandom, fanworks, and fan culture. She’s also a strong advocate for space exploration, planetary science, and science literacy in general. She writes frequently about the intersections of mental health, creative work, and the writing community. When she’s not writing or librarianing, she can be found rolling dice at the Dungeons & Dragons table, digging in the garden, feeding her video game addiction, or improvising truly terrible songs about her dogs.

She loves Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. Never bring up Sherlock Holmes in her presence. You’ll regret it.

Megan is represented by the incomparable Barbara Poelle of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency.

You can find Megan on twitterinstagram, and occasionally tumblr, and you can buy her debut YA space opera, THE DISASTERS, wherever books are sold, or add it your goodreads list. Her second book, a YA fantasy/sci-fi mashup called SPELLHACKER, will be out on January 21, 2020. It’s now available for preorder, or can be added to goodreads.

Megan is also a three-time Pitch Wars mentor and a class of 2015 mentee, a TeenPit mentor, and has served as a NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison.
