One small fandom convention. One teen beauty pageant. One meet cute waiting to happen.
Up and coming fanfic author Kaylee Beaumont is internally screaming at the chance to finally meet her fandom friends in real life and spend a weekend at GreatCon. She also has a side quest for the weekend:
•Try out they/them pronouns to see how it feels
•Wear more masculine-presenting cosplay
•Kiss a girl for the first time
It’s… a lot, and Kay mostly wants to lie face down on the hotel floor. Especially when her hometown bully, Miss North Carolina, shows up in the very same hotel. But there’s this con-sponsored publishing contest, and the chance to meet her fandom idols… and then, there’s Teagan.
Pageant queen Teagan Miller (Miss Virginia) has her eye on the much-needed prize: the $25,000 scholarship awarded to the winner of the Miss Cosmic Teen USA pageant. She also has secrets:
•She loves the dresses but hates the tiaras
•She’s a giant nerd for everything GreatCon
•She’s gay af
If Teagan can just keep herself wrapped up tight for one more weekend, she can claim the scholarship and go off to college out and proud. If she’s caught, she could lose everything she’s worked for. If her rival, Miss North Carolina, has anything to do with it, that’s exactly how it’ll go down.
When Teagan and Kay bump into one another the first night, sparks fly. Their connection is intense—as is their shared enemy. If they’re spotted, the safe space of the con will be shattered, and all their secrets will follow them home. The risks are great… but could the reward of embracing their true selves be worth it?

Odaat GIF by One Day At A Time
please appreciate the fact that I searched through 17 pages of gifs to find this perfect one of Elena and Syd!!!!

this one is entirely my own aesthetic and preferences, but I did not like the blue on the cover (which is why I made it purple) and the illustration style is not my favorite. but. BUT! the rainbow! the colors! the fonts! the pure queer joy! I love the feel of this cover even if I don’t love all of the elements!!!

9/10 stars!

  • #a story of nerdy queer teenagers being nerdy is something that can actually be so personal
  • #TWO events but only ONE hotel
  • #non binary character written by a non binary author

okay. I have 20 pages of highlights for this book, and 43 quotes that are my favorites. in the interest of not having this section take longer to read than reading the actual book, I am sharing one (1) image graphic of my most favorite quote here. if there’s interest, maybe I’ll post more at a later date? idk. let me know what you think!

About Remi K. England

M. K. England hates writing about themself in the third person, so we’re gonna drop that now, mmkay?

I’ve had a lot of jobs. I worked in public libraries the longest, from 2011 to 2021. I spent most of that time as a Teen Librarian, running free events for teens, specializing in YA books, and generally having a grand time. I’ve also been an experimental music composer, a teaching assistant, a bookstore clerk, a movie concessions worker, a customer service punching bag, a teaching assistant, and many, many other illustrious positions. Teen librarian was definitely the best.

I’m nonbinary (they/them or she/her) and queer, and I live in the country on a small piece of land with two dogs, a partner, a baby, and a vegetable garden. I’ve been reading fanfiction and generally drowning in fandom since I was twelve, when my family got our first computer. I love outer space and science. I’ve been a gamer (both video games and tabletop) for as long as I can remember. I was a three-time Pitch Wars mentor and a class of 2015 mentee, a TeenPit mentor, and I’ve served as a NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison in two regions.

Things you’ll often find in my books: sly nerdy references, mental health, pure joyful triumph, queer kids who save the world, and happy endings.

Look, I probably do love Star Wars more than you do. Facts are facts, sorry.

I wrote some books: THE DISASTERS and SPELLHACKER, both available for purchase wherever books are sold in hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook. I’m also now writing YA contemporary, such as the upcoming THE ONE TRUE ME & YOU, under the name Remi K. England. I’ve got some other as-yet-unannounced books coming in 2021-2023, but you can sign up for my newsletter for the earliest inside scoop. I’m represented by Eric Smith at P.S. Literary. You can find me on twitter, instagram, and very occasionally tumblr.

If you wanna read me rambling about writing, books, and general nerdiness, scroll down and read some of the interviews linked at the bottom of this page!

If you’ve read this far, hey, thanks. Be extra kind to someone today. Maybe yourself. I hope you have a great day.

Have you read The One True Me and You yet? Do you love this book as much as I do? If you haven’t read it yet, is it on your tbr? Let me know in the comments and have a splendiferous day!
