Abandoned as infants, Tovi and her twin brother were raised by an eclectic tribe of warm, kind people in a treehouse village in the valley. After her brother’s sudden disappearance Tovi questions her life and her faith in an invisible King. Ignoring her best friend Silas’ advice, she decides to search for her brother in the kingdom on top of the mountain.
Above the cloud, the Council of Masters receives their orders. Tovi and her brother are the objectives. King Damien has a plan and Tovi is the key. The Council of Masters want her, but will she remain unscathed?
Amidst the glamour of the kingdom above the cloud Tovi is torn between her own dark desires and unanswered questions. It starts with a snake and a crown. When the ring is complete, will her life be over?

I worked on Kingdom Above the Cloud for over a decade, and the songs that inspired it reflect that! You’ll see a lot of early 2000s mixed with more recent music (and some older). There is SO much I can’t say about each song because it would give away too much of the plot. So, I’ve organized them in groupings that tell you a bit about what they inspired.

Overarching Themes/Plot: When picking my writing music, it’s always those songs that can take me to a totally different place in my imagination! I lean toward super big, dramatic moments, and I love secular music with underlying spiritual themes.

Land of Adia (Village of Treehouses): Adia is bright, cheerful, and whimsical. All of the following songs take my imagination straight to sunshiney hills, running through grass and wildflowers, and bare feet and hands climbing trees.

Tovi Tivka: Tovi is a mess of emotions. She begins the story very bitter and doubtful, and she faces great danger and temptation throughout the pages. Some of the songs on this list reflect her very lowest point, when she finds herself completely broken and trapped above the cloud.

Silas: Tovi’s best friend in Adia.

King Damien & the Council of Masters: Evil King Damien has assembled his council of ruthless, cunning masters to carry out his plot against Adia.

Eryx: A member of the Council of Masters, Eryx became my favorite character as I wrote. When I heard the first song on this playlist, A Bad Dream by Keane, I suddenly knew that Eryx is not a villain afterall!

The Hidden Heart: The Hidden Heart is the secret underground resistance on the mountain. They oppose Damien and see after Adwin, the Creator.

Maggie Platt is a writer, traveler, cancer survivor, and dreamer. Her greatest joys are being Auntie M to her amazing nieces and nephew and sitting with students and friends over cups of coffee and deep conversations. She works at her alma mater, Anderson University in Indiana, and she lives in a cozy little cottage nearby where students come to sit on her couch just to laugh, cry, and talk about life.
