Welcome to my mini-challenge!
Congrats to Tarissa @ In The Bookcase!
While you’re here, take a look at the giveaway I’m hosting for a copy of Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan!
I had so much fun hosting this challenge last year that I’m back with it again! If you want to read the story of how I came up with this idea, keep reading! Otherwise, turn to page 24 go down to where it says Part One and follow the instructions!
Fun fact: I work at a library. Technically, I work in the Children’s Room at a fairly large library. We frequently have patrons come in and ask about “that book, you know, where the main character did stuff and the cover was red, I think? Or maybe blue?” Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love helping people finding what they’re looking for, and decoding an extremely vague description like that -and finding the right book!- is an amazing feeling. And today you get to feel like that too!
This challenge will have two parts. For Part One, please leave a comment describing the book you’re currently reading (or your favorite book, or the book next to you, etc.) as vaguely as possible. Describe the cover if you like, or some plot points, or maybe just tell me what you think it’s called (even if you’re totally wrong). Try and be as vague as possible. Bonus bragging points for anyone who describes a popular book that stumps people. Here are a few examples to show you what I mean:
Example 1: You know, it’s that book with the people and stuff. There’s a school, and friends, and a necklace. I think the cover has a girl on it?
Example 2: I have a lot of friends who liked this book and I want to read it, too. I think there was a mountain or like a volcano or something? And they talked about food a lot. Sometimes there was dancing, or maybe just singing.
Example 3: I swear this was a movie or a tv show or… something? Something about a play, and there were those people that were in love maybe? The cover was definitely red. I think.
Click on the spoiler for the answer to the examples!
View Spoiler »For Part Two, please comment on someone else’s description with what you think the book is. See how many you can get right and remember to have fun!
Complete Part One AND Part Two between 8am EST on April 6 and 8am EST on April 7 for a chance to win a gift card to Amazon (or if Amazon doesn’t ship to you, Book Depository!)!
[…] Vague Recollections: This one’s mine! You can find the post and all the information for it here! […]
It’s that one with the sword and the flowers on the cover and it’s kind of about Dracula, but not really. Or maybe about his daughter? or something?
PS. this might be totally incorrect but I feel is what someone who only vaguely knows the book would say.
Hunting Prince Dracula?
And I darken by Kiersten White.
Yes!
It’s the one about powers, monsters and kingdoms. There is a romance and I think the author is a female.
It’s the one trilogy that has been recently adapted to a tv series.

The Dark Materials Trilogy?
Well, a lot of this book is about cleaning. Lots of cleaning, lots of angst over things not getting cleaned.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo
I agree!
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up? LOL
The only thing I can think of is The Life Changing Magic of Tyding Up of maybe Outer Order, Inner Calm.
Since many others guessed the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I will guess her second book, Spark Joy.
A Manual for Cleaning Women?
Haha I knew everyone would guess that but nope. I think the cover has a person is like orange, and brown and splattery-speckly? Maybe has something to do with cotton or linen or the like?
Maid?
Orange cover, weird title with something about music, set somewhere in the Southern US, woman author.
Where the Crawdads Sing?
No, but totally can see how you’d guess that! And WTCS is on my tbr.
I’m currently reading it so it immediately popped into my head!
Is it I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings or To Kill a Mockingbird?
Where the Crawdads Sing is my guess
MaryR recently posted…Readathon!
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings?
How about I know Why The Caged Bird Sings?
Sing, Unburied, Sing?
Yes!
Oh yay! Great clues!
Go Set a Watchman?
(IDK, it always makes me think of All Along the Watchtower…)
I’ll give you one I was so proud of myself for figuring out when a student asked me to help her remember what book she’d read over the summer. “There were kids who could fly, and it turned out that their dad wasn’t really their dad…or maybe he was their dad? Something like that.”
Immediately after reading this I started to laugh because I could only think about Peter Pan but I’m sure my guess is totally incorrect!
The Lake House by Patterson?
It’s one with a boy, and an evil woman and a villain. There’s also a bird on some copies of the cover.
Harry Potter?
Which one 😉
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Yes!
It’s my mom’s favorite book! She said it was about politics or the economy or something. It’s long.
Alexander Hamilton?
Nah… it’s fiction. And she said something about travel? On a bus? Or a train?
You know it’s that book? It’s not big… it’s kind of hot, all over the place…
Little Fires Everywhere?
Yes!
Woot!
The Little Book of Hygge?
It’s about love, biases, preconceived notions and people who really need to mind their own business!
Thai sounds like the the Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney. 🙂
No, something else.
Emma?
The one about a man who wakes up from a coma or something? I think there are trees in the title
The Universe Versus Alex Woods? 😀
This book has a cover with an item of clothing or something on it? Maybe a dress or something? The title looks kinda bloody or written in blood or something. I think it’s about this girl that ends up in this weird place with some weird people and creatures and a potion called PermaSmile or something.
Dorathy must due?
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige.
Dorothy must die by Danielle Paige?
The one with the narrator who’s like a nurse or something, and maybe identical twins or clones too. Bit of a bummer…
Replica?
Alas no,
Its that book about these girls who are sisters and stuff. I think there’s a pirate Rodrigo or Glenn?
😂
Little Women!
The one that’s kinda like a gay man’s Eat, Pray, Love. I think it won an award…?
Less?
Yaaaas
Great clues!
A bunch of Asian people lament not getting their favorite table at a restaurant, meanwhile someone has a miscarriage…all sorts of issues arise, but lots of laughs, too.
Rich People Problems
You got it!
Hooray!
Crazy Rich Asians? I haven’t read it yet but I can see a favorite table being an issue.
It’s a book about a guy who wakes up and things are different. Something about a chandelier. Art. Notebooks.
The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn a Hardcastle?
It’s a book that involves a family. You might have to be insane to read it. Or is it to survive it? I think there was a child’s toy on the cover…
It??
The Shining?
The Shining
You know that book with the female mc? Who thinks a lot? I think it might be old, or maybe not that old, I’m not sure. I think it has something with a heart in it.
Where the Heart Is?
Three young ladies and their mother are forced from their family home because their jerk of a half-brother gets all their inheritance, he goes back on their father’s dying wishes, taking the women’s home from them. The ladies then move into a small cottage in the country.
Sense & Sensibility?
Sense and Sensibility! Just read that book a few months ago — and watched the movie. :O
Tarissa recently posted…Book Review: West from Home
It’s a book…kind of like that book about Ketterdam…there’s a heist & some people. Maybe magic? Maybe some puzzles?
Sarah @ Reviews and Readathons recently posted…Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon April 2019
This one I know – Six of Crows!
The Westing Game?
Kayla recently posted…Mid Event Survey – April ’19
The gilded wolves by Roshani Chokshi
Portrait of Dorian Gray?
I didn’t mean to comment that on this clue!
It’s that big one. First in its series. It’s about magic and battles and dragons. Tyrion isn’t in it.
The Hobbit?
Is it Fire and Blood by George RR Martin
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Fire and Ice #1)
So the cover is red. It definitely might have something to do with a haunted house. Maybe somebody’s watching them? But maybe it’s just me watching.
Broken River
There’s a girl on the cover and she’s wearing like armor…or maybe a mech suit? And there’s magic, but like, magic is evil.
Throne of Glass?
A Court of Thornes and Roses?
It’s that book where the girl goes to that place, her name is a month, I think? Anyway, it’s the second book in that series and she goes Below!
The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There
Nailed it! 😉
It’s about these kids who travel for a while, the cover has green letters? I may be wrong tho.
The one where a boy taking care of a sheep, or maybe a pig, loses his pet and makes friends with royalty while searching for it.
The Alchemist
Really excellent guesses but no.
The Little Prince?
Here is mine: “It’s the book by that author…the one with the hard name…the name that kinda sounds like a common name….That author wrote another book…you know it…lots of people liked it…that book was sort of like this one….What else can I tell you? I think the stories in both books are about things that really happened…even though I don’t think most people ever heard about those things until they read the books….But I don’t want her first book…I want her second book…at least I think it’s her second book….It will definitely be the second book of hers that I’ve read. It’s pretty sad and it takes place, like her first book, during the war. Can you find that book for me?”
This book has a “hunchback” (no, not THAT one)… meets a girl, from some foreign country. Lots of old memories are dug up… spring springs… and the robin sings.
Tarissa recently posted…Book Review: The White City
It’s about these kids who travel for a while. I think the letters are green, but I may be wrong.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
This book is like a scavanger hunt…it starts in one country, then boom! they are somewhere else. That Italian Renaissance guy gets mentioned a lot, the one with the funny hat. I think this book has been made into a movie, too.
The DaVinci Code?
Close…
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown?
Angels and Demons?
One I got on the reference desk: it’s a series about a girl with a Roman name, and her mother is dead. I think she goes to school in Canada?
As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust, Flavia de Luce by Alan Bradley!
Yes!
I love the Flavia books!!!
It’s a book for younger kids, like one of those illustrated books. I think it’s about a group of teenagers, or middle school maybe? They’re putting on a school play or something.
Kayla recently posted…Mid Event Survey – April ’19
Your ideas, kinda. A life story of someone who does a thing with her mouth.
It’s about some beautiful dude that has a painting of himself, but the painting is like really ugly.
The Portrait of Dorian Gray?
I heard about this book. It has a number in the title? And it has something to do with Shakespeare but in the future. Oh, and I think part of the cover is green.
Can you help me find that really scary book? I think it was by that old guy, who’s been writing for a long time….You know it’s about that place and stuff happens all the time. I’m sure you’ve read it.
Could be any of Stephen Kings books so I take a guess and say The Shining
