A lone witch has powers. A coven has a multitude more.

New girl and secret witch Iris just wants to get through her first day of school without a panic attack. The last thing she expects is to be taken in by a coven of three witches-soft-spoken Greta, thoughtful and musical Ridley, and fiery and spirited Binx. They may be the first witches Iris has met IRL, but their coven is not alone in their small northwestern town.

The Triad is the other coven at their school. When the Triad's not using spells to punish their exes or break up happy couples for fun, they practice dark magic. The two covens have a rivalry stretching all the way back to junior high.
When tragedy strikes and one of their own is murdered, the rival covens must band together to find out who is responsible before it's too late. Someone's anti-witch ideology has turned deadly . . . and one of them is next.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from B*Witch?

We have so many quotes, scenes, and moments that we love. Are we allowed to mention three here? Okay, we will mention three (in no particular order of preference):

  1. The scene where Greta and Iris first meet. There is so much going in this scene. Iris is being harassed by three drunk jerks, and Greta comes to her rescue in the funniest way (we won’t spoil that little detail for our readers, though!). Greta suspects that Iris is a witch, but because magic is illegal, she can’t ask Iris directly or reveal that she herself is a witch. And so they sit on a bench and pet a stray kitty and do this conversational dance, trying to suss each other out. The moment when Iris finally admits to Greta that she is a witch is really adorable.

  2. The scene where Ridley and Penelope go to Starbucks for pumpkin spice lattes. It’s similar to the Iris-Greta scene in that Ridley suspects Penelope is a witch but can’t ask her outright or reveal her own witch-ness to Penelope. The other layer is that Ridley has a crush on Penelope, so she’s really happy to be sitting there spending time with her, getting to know her. At one point, Ridley reveals a tragic family secret that she hasn’t really shared with anyone because it’s so hard for her to talk about; there’s something about Penelope, though, that makes her want to share this part of her. That revelation then results in Penelope sharing a secret, too, and Ridley sharing yet another secret. The two girls bond in a very beautiful way, and whenever we re-read that scene, we get weepy.

  3. The scene(s) where Binx meets and interacts with the puppy that eventually becomes her familiar. Binx is independent to a fault and also proudly un-sentimental and doesn’t believe in emotional attachments. And so when this little dirt-covered stray shows up in her yard, she is annoyed and tries to send it back to wherever it came from … but then she misses it … and then she really misses it. Affection is a journey for Binx, and this particular journey is really sweet.

The common theme in all these scenes is letting someone (or something) into your life, lowering your walls, being vulnerable. Our witches live in a tough and scary world (as do real-life teens), and we loved watching them be brave and take risks in order to make connections with each other.
