Orphaned and forced to serve her country’s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don’t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.
In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible—she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father—their nation’s greatest traitor—once tried to destroy the automatons.
Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn’t just trying to control Karis; it’s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother…and the secret that’s held her country in its power for centuries.
What would you do if you spent the day with karis? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I feel like Karis would drag me off on an adventure I was ill-prepared for and I’d spend most of the day trying not to die or fall off anything. That being said, one food I researched for my book that I’ve always wanted to try is figs with honey, so maybe we could go eat that together. It’s such a seemingly simple recipe you think I’d have tried it by now, but I haven’t.
If karis were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?
I’ve always thought that Karis would get along with the characters from Tarnished are the Stars, especially Anna. Their worlds are completely different, but they’ve both spent a long time fighting to protect the people they care about, so I feel like they would bond over that.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from this golden flame?
Most of my favorite scenes are spoilery, but I will say that I quite enjoyed writing the first scene. It was fun exploring this new world and watching Karis get up to hijinks.
One of my favorite quotes is the one that I had printed on my postcards and it is:
“Together we are fierceness. Together we are change.”
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
I play the clarinet and I really enjoy instrumental music, so I was a bit sad that I didn’t have the chance to incorporate a lot of the instruments they would have played back then, like the lyres and the flutes.
If Karis and Alix had social media profiles, what would they look like and why?
Karis seems like she’d be a twitter person. I feel like the shorter, quicker format of tweets would fit her well. Her profile pic would probably be something that she had randomly taken, since she wouldn’t spend a lot of time trying to get it right.
Alix, on the other hand, would probably be really into Instagram because it’s so visual, and he’d be posting pictures of his garden every day. His profile pic would probably be some really artistic shot of a songbird.
As a fellow ace, I have to know: What does ownvoices ace representation mean to you?
Ownvoices ace representation is just so important to me. I want ace readers, especially ace teen readers, to see their stories out there, so that they know just how important their stories are and that they can tell them.
