Instagram TO BE BORN OF THE FOREST IS A GIFT AND A CURSE.
Rora is a shifter, as magical as all those born in the wilderness--and as feared. She uses her abilities to spy for the king, traveling under different guises and listening for signs of trouble.
When a magical illness surfaces across the kingdom, Rora uncovers a devastating truth: Finley, the young prince and her best friend, has caught it, too. His only hope is stardust, the rarest of magical elements, found deep in the wilderness where Rora grew up--and to which she swore never to return.
But for her only friend, Rora will face her past and brave the dark, magical wood, journeying with her brother and the obstinate, older prince who insists on coming. Together, they must survive sentient forests and creatures unknown, battling an ever-changing landscape while escaping human pursuers who want them dead. With illness gripping the kingdom and war on the horizon, Finley's is not the only life that hangs in the balance.
About Elayne Audrey Becker
History, myth, mountains, and magic. These are the cornerstones of my personality.
The call to adventure has long been a guiding force for me. Childhood visits to the National Parks out west grew into a full-fledged wanderlust and love for wildlife that has carried me across the United States and internationally. Hiking in the Canadian Rockies, I have reveled in the indelible wilderness of ancient forests, lakes, and mountains. Exploring old European cobblestone cities, or tramping over the weather-beaten hills of the Scottish Highlands, I have felt the ways in which land holds memory. You will often find this love of nature, history, and adventure folded into the stories I write.
My debut novel, Forestborn, is the first installment in a fantasy duology that tells a story of danger, damage, and hardship, but also friendship, growth, and hope, layered over the kind of inner peace that only nature can provide. Prior to pivoting to the author side of the desk, I worked as an associate editor at Macmillan for five years, in the heart of New York City’s Flatiron District. There, I was fortunate enough to work with writers and fellow editors who were as enchanted as I am by the magical and the twisted.
I hold a BA in Classics and History from Vassar College, a liberal arts school of scholars and creatives in New York’s Hudson Valley, and an MSc in Professional Communication from the University of Aberdeen, a historic university on Scotland’s northeastern coast. I have also spent four transformative months at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, during which I traveled across Italy studying the ancient marks that humans leave and the stories imbedded in old stone.
Always, I welcome new storytelling projects and experiences that center on character development and growth, perseverance in the face of adversity, the natural world, and turning points in human history.
