Happy Friday! Today I am participating in First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books, AND First Lines Friday, hosted by Wandering Words!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

“Be careful what you wish for.”

Anyone have any guesses on what book this is? I’ll give you a few clues…

Last chance to guess!

Today’s book is…

In her childhood, Rose Franklin accidentally discovered a giant metal hand buried beneath the ground outside Deadwood, South Dakota. As an adult, Dr. Rose Franklin led the team that uncovered the rest of the body parts which together form Themis: a powerful robot of mysterious alien origin. She, along with linguist Vincent, pilot Kara, and the unnamed Interviewer, protected the Earth from geopolitical conflict and alien invasion alike. Now, after nearly ten years on another world, Rose returns to find her old alliances forfeit and the planet in shambles. And she must pick up the pieces of the Earth Defense Corps as her own friends turn against each other.

“Be careful what you wish for.”

I read Sylvain Neuvel’s A History of What Comes Next in February and I LOVED IT (review here), so when I saw that his previous series, The Themis Files, was available on Libby I borrowed the audiobooks and started listening. Fast forward a week and a half and I have now finished listening to all three books because they were SO GOOD I kept reading them in like a day or two! There are so many great quotes in these books, but I do really love this one at the beginning of Only Human, which is book three in the trilogy.

Have you read these books before? What did you think of them? If not, what have you been reading lately?

Do you participate in either of these memes? Let me know if you do and link your posts in the comments so I can visit! And don’t forget to have a splendiferous week!

Such a good trilogy! I haven’t read his newest one yet! But his short story, The Test, is really good too!
