Happy Friday! Today I am participating in First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books, AND First Lines Friday, hosted by Wandering Words!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

In a town house at a fashionable address on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, every lamp blazes.”

I’m intrigued! Anyone have any guesses on what book this is? I’ll give you a few clues…

Last chance to guess!

Today’s book is…

Evangeline O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is ecstatic. It's 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult. Evie worries he'll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far.
When the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfurl in the city that never sleeps. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened....

As soon as I finish listening to Maureen Johnson’s TRULY DEVIOUS series, I’m going to start THE DIVINERS series by Libba Bray! I’ve actually read about half of the first book before, but that was on a train ride about… six or seven years ago? So I’m really excited to listen to the whole series now that it’s completed!

Do you participate in either of these memes? Let me know if you do and link your posts in the comments so I can visit! And don’t forget to have a splendiferous week!

Happy Friday! My first line is from “The Price of Valor” by Susan May Warren:

“As long as Hamilton Jones had breath in his body, nothing, not even tooth decay, would hurt his little girl.”

    From Backlash by Rachel Dylan:

The incessant knocking on her condo door made Layla Karam grumble as she threw off the covers.
