A teen girl starting at a new school is torn between long-held loyalties and a bright new love.

Paisley is really looking forward to college. She is ready to take charge of her destiny and embrace some new experiences! Finding a hot guy to make out with at her first ever college party seems like a great start . . . until her best friend informs her that mystery guy is actually Carter Schmitt, Paisley's sworn enemy who basically ruined their lives in middle school.

So much for new people and exciting new experiences. Oh well. Paisley will just pretend he doesn't exist. Of course that would be easier if Carter, AKA her super-hot-sworn-enemy, hadn't ended up in three of her classes AND the same work study. Is it too late to rethink this college thing?

If Paisley and Carter were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?

I have decided to send Paisley and Carter on a triple date with two of my favorite YA couples. A big reason I wrote The Shortest Distance Between Love and Hate was because I got really into the enemies to lovers trope. Mostly thanks to The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Once I had read that, I went searching for other books like it. At this point I’ll pretty much read anything that people tell me is enemies to lovers.

But my two favorite YA enemies to lovers are Alex Approximately by Jenn Bennett and The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You by Lily Anderson. I feel like the couples from these two books would get along pretty well with Paisley and Carter.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. It really appeals to the fanfiction nerd in me, imagining the scenes between the characters I created and characters from other books that I love.

Paisley and Carter are big into the MCU and various geekery, so would have plenty to talk to Trixie and Ben about. As for Bailey and Porter, they could bond about having to work with someone you hate, even as you’re ever so slowly starting to warm to them, and maybe even fall for them a little bit.

So, what would they do on this date? What would they talk about? In this imaginary town, you can easily travel the country with a blink of an eye.

I’m imagining a trip to the local comic book store near where Trixie and Ben live, followed by a movie on the beach in Bailey and Porter’s California beach town, and finishing the night off at Paisley and Carter’s favorite New Jersey diner.

It would be a completely epic and worthy night for all of these characters that I love.

I’m a teen librarian from New Jersey where I was born and raised. I have a BA in Communication and a Master of Library and Information Science from Rutgers University. When I’m not writing, or teen librarian-ing, I enjoy reading, slot machines, marathoning TV shows, and long scrolls through Tumblr.

I enjoy enemies to more, best friends to more, and fake romances. Love triangles irritate me too much to want to read about them.
