Sisters April and Jenn haven’t been close in years. Jenn’s too busy with school, the family antique shop, and her boyfriend, and April would rather play soccer and hang out with the boy next door.
But when April notices her older sister is sad about staying home for college, she decides to do something about it. The girls set off to revive a pact they made as kids: spend an epic day exploring the greatest hits of their childhood and all that Los Angeles has to offer.
Then April learns that Jenn has been keeping a secret that could rip their family—and their feuding parents—apart. With only one day to set things right, the sisters must decide if their relationship is worth saving, or if the truth will tear them apart for good.
What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always loved books and movies about sisters, plus I have a sister of my own who I’m very close to (hi Diana!) so I thought it would be fun to write a story that reminded me of her and of growing up. I also wanted to set a book in LA since that’s where we’re from.
What is your absolute favorite, read over-and-over again, book?
I’m not actually a re-reader (except HARRY POTTER—I can read that series again and again). But I can watch The Fifth Element a million times, and I’ll never turn off an episode of Law & Order even if I’ve seen it before.
What’s your current favorite book?
I just finished THE WILDER GIRLS by Rory Power, and it was phenomenal.
If April and Jenn were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?
Oh gosh, what a great (and tough!) question. I think Jenn and April would get along with the characters in SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA, and also with Cameron in IF I’M BEING HONEST by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka, which is also set in LA!
What would you do if you spent the day with April and Jenn? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I’d go to In-N-Out for a Double-Double, and then to Venice Beach, where we’d swim and suntan until the sun went down.
Do you have any advice you would give to the characters in your book?
Trust the people who love you enough to tell them the truth about who you are and what you need.
