A trans boy enters a throw-down battle for the title of Homecoming King with the boy he dumped last summer in ZR Ellor's contemporary YA debut.
Jeremy Harkiss, cheer captain and student body president, won’t let coming out as a transgender boy ruin his senior year. Instead of bowing to the bigots and outdate school administration, Jeremy decides to make some noise—and how better than by challenging his all-star ex-boyfriend, Lukas for the title of Homecoming King?
Lukas Rivers, football star and head of the Homecoming Committee, is just trying to find order in his life after his older brother’s funeral and the loss long-term girlfriend—who turned out to be a boy. But when Jeremy threatens to break his heart and steal his crown, Lukas kick starts a plot to sabotage Jeremy’s campaign.
When both boys take their rivalry too far, the dance is on the verge of being canceled. To save Homecoming, they’ll have to face the hurt they’re both hiding—and the lingering butterflies they can’t deny.

What would you do if you spent the day with Jeremy and Lukas? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

There’s a diner in the world of MAY THE BEST MAN WIN that I think would be a fun place to hang out! You can get a burger, fries, and milkshake for a bargain price. It’s actually based off a real place in the town where the book is set, and I think it would be a fun place to go!

If Jeremy and Lukas were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

I’m not quite sure! I do like the idea of the two of them perhaps finding their way into an even-more high stakes YA novel. An alternate universe where both of them found their way into the Hunger Games might be fun to read (though my characters would be quite upset with me, I imagine, for putting them in that position!

Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? What would your powers and name be and why?

I’d really like the superpower to fly—I think that would be fun, and a great way to see the world! And even though I write about characters misbehaving, I’m a bit of a goody-two-shoes, so I’d probably be a superhero—I don’t think I have the guts to go bad!

If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?

I would probably include a newspaper, some photos of me and my friends, and maybe one of my favorite books from that year. I would want items that reminded me of where I was at that point in my life so that when I dug it up I could remember everything I was up to back then!

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

I did a lot of reading about different cheerleading stunts to flesh out the cheer squad in the book, but in the end, the focus of the cheer squad scenes was really more about the interpersonal drama then the stunts, so I didn’t include much. I enjoyed learning more about the sport!

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from May the Best Man Win?

I really like the Homecoming game, where [SPOILER] wins the crown! To me, that scene is the culmination of everything the characters have fought for, and I love how well it comes together.
