Marty has terrible luck and she knows exactly why. While working as a housekeeper at the ritzy Grand Palms hotel in Maui, Marty made it a habit to steal small items from the guests. What better way to stick it to the rich snobs they have to clean up after? Marty knows how to turn her luck around -- she just has to return all of the items she stole.
When Marty meets Will, a new guest who is staying for the summer, she does the one thing she always promised herself she'd never do -- fall for an out-of-towner. But Will's special, different from the other guests at the hotel. Maybe Marty's luck is finally turning around.
After a string of misunderstandings and accidents threaten Will and Marty's relationship, Marty has to find a way to fix her luck for good -- or say goodbye to Will forever.
What inspired you to write this book?
Usually, the setting or situation for a book will come to me first, and in the case of JUST MY LUCK, it was the setting. I really wanted to write a story set in Maui, one of my favorite places in the world. Marty, this girl who was trying to make up for her past misdeeds and desperately restore her less than stellar karma, came next.
What is your absolute favorite, read over-and-over again, book?
Ooh, I have so many favorites that I do read over-and-over again, so I will give you a few: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills, This Adventure Ends, also by Emma Mills, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart by Jenn Bennett….I could go on (and on and on).
What’s your current favorite book?
My latest favorite book is Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Run out and read it!
TV comp your book! (How would you pitch your book with tv shows?)
Believe it or not, I pitched JUST MY LUCK as a comp to The Brady Bunch…the very special Brady episode when the family went to Hawaii and the Brady boys were cursed by the tiki idol that Bobby found in the construction site and decided to keep.
Do you have any advice you would give to the characters in your book?
I would have told Marty not to steal stuff from the guests in the first place! Then she wouldn’t have had to worry about her luck sucking so badly (but then I wouldn’t have had much of a book, so).
What would you do if you spent the day with Marty? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I would love to spend the day with Marty because I will take any chance to go back to Maui. I used some of my favorite places on the island in my book — the taco place based on Maui Tacos, Leoda’s Pie Shop, eating shaved ice, watching the sea turtles make their way to shore in Napili Bay, checking out the quaint shops in Lahaina.
