Interview with Jen

What inspired you to write Going Off Script?

The idea for this book started forming after my favorite queer character was killed on one of my favorite tv shows. It was one in a string of queer female characters killed off on many different shows, all around the same time. Fans were so frustrated with this that they launched #BuryYourGays online, and seeing that all unfold and grow into a powerful movement inspired this book.

Do you have any deleted scenes or subplots from the book you can share?

Nothing I can share, but I definitely wanted to write more script pages for Silver Falls to include that wouldn’t have made the cut.

Who is your favorite character from this book and why?

My favorite character is probably Parker. He’s hilarious, but he’s also a big sweetheart who cares fiercely for his family and friends, and is a strong source of wisdom and encouragement for Bex.

Who was the least fun character to write in this story and why?

The least fun character to write was Malcolm, because he just makes me so mad. He’s an arrogant, manipulative douche on a power-trip, and unfortunately I think most readers will know someone just like him.

What would you do if you spent the day with Bex? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

Honestly, I’d probably just tag along with her while she worked, geeking out over the film sets, celebrity sightings and being able to witness TV magic happening right in front of me. Then we’d go to a bar in West Hollywood and hang out with all the other characters.

What would Bex’s favorite book be and why?

Probably Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour, it’s the perfect blend of romance, Hollywood and film set life that Bex loves.
