What about a week? A month, year, or forever?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a day, I would either want to be Lucy Pevensie experiencing <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> wonder of stumbling into another world, or Beauty exploring <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> Beast\u2019s palace library.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a week, I\u2019d want to be Scarlett in <em>Caraval<\/em> so I could play <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> game and wear pretty dresses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a month, I\u2019d want to be Katniss so I could learn some valuable survival skills.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a year, I\u2019d want to be a student at Hogwarts\u2014but not Hermione. She has to stress about exams and grades too much. I\u2019d want to coast academically while exploring <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> grounds and drinking butterbeer at Hogsmeade.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For forever, I\u2019d definitely want to be a hobbit in <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> Shire because peaceful scenery, good food, good parties, and a simple life sounds great to me.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What would you do if you spent the day with Nat? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I think Nat and I would go on a fun camping trip in <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> woods of East Texas. We\u2019d stop for some sweet tea and junk food on <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> way, go paddleboarding on a lake, and try to freak each other out with scary stories around <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> campfire.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If Nat were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is kind of a tough one! I wouldn\u2019t mind seeing her transported to <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> world of my fantasy series, <em><span class=\"il\">The<\/span> Nissera Chronicles<\/em>. Even though Nat has her own magic, I think she would be in awe of elicromancy. She would have no patience for snobby royals, though, which would be fun to see play out.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m not a big fan of doing in-depth research, so I research as I go and find only what I need to write <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> story. One research aspect that I enjoyed was reading spell books and grimoires to get some inspiration and to kind of piece together original spells. I grew up believing that dabbling in magic is sinful, so even just reading spell books for research purposes gave me chills up my spine!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from <em>The Bitterwine Oath<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I don\u2019t want to spoil anything, but I loved writing <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> scene where Nat and her friends go to <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> haunted cabin in <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> woods. Nat has started to suspect that one of her friends may be a member of a murderous cult, and she\u2019s trying to make sense of her suspicions while <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> rest of <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> group is just acting like silly teenagers, trespassing and making a joke out of <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> creepy stuff they encounter. I loved tapping into that sense of reckless adventure I used to have as a teenager that makes you seek out faux-danger for thrills and chills and glory. It was fun turning that around on Nat over <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> course of <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> scene, gradually making her aware that she\u2019s in real danger and that something truly dark is going down in her town.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019ve actually rewritten huge portions of this book, <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> ending included. I\u2019m sorry to say that at this point, I can barely remember what <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> original ending was! That\u2019s a good window into writing and revising, though. Whatever <span class=\"il\">the<\/span> ending used to be, I like this one so much better! But it wasn\u2019t until she studied abroad in Orl\u00e9ans, France\u00a0during\u00a0college\u00a0that the premise for her first novel materialized.
