Looking away, I bit my lip and shook my head. Then I rolled my neck and left shoulder out, before exhaling. \u201cIt\u2019ll be fine. It has to be,\u201d I whispered, pressing back from the sink.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could at least make one good thing happen today. The bathroom door swung shut behind me and I hit the \u201cUp\u201d button on the elevator outside. I headed to the third floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doors opened and my feet carried me into the hallway. Heavy glass double doors sat right outside the elevator. On the front of them it said, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plandome Mental Health Services<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick scan of the hall showed there was nothing else up here other than this office and a bathroom. I was about to turn around, feeling kind of guilty for coming up here now. The di- rectory board probably listed the mental health center anyway; I could\u2019ve just looked at that on the second floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I reached for the elevator button again, the bleached blonde with the purple streaks pushed the frosted glass doors open\u2014and we were face to face. I jabbed at the \u201cDown\u201d button on the elevator a million times like it would get there any faster. It was no use, though, I\u2019d already been discovered as the world\u2019s biggest stalker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why was I being so pathetic? I was Mason Vance. I just had sex with the hottest senior in school last night\u2014without taking her to the dance and with a broken wrist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not stalking you,\u201d I blurted, once the girl was standing beside me. The elevator was taking an eternity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDidn\u2019t say you were,\u201d she said, staring at the red numbers above the elevator as they lit up. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floor one . . . Floor two . . .\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seriously? She didn\u2019t even care I followed her up here?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elevator doors finally opened. We both got in. \u201cFirst floor?\u201d she asked. I couldn\u2019t tell if she was joking since she didn\u2019t ask me earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d I said, still staring at her blank face. Then, I straightened up and cracked my neck. \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing elevators have emergency buttons for fires. Want to know why?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She laughed without smiling. I\u2019d never seen anyone pull that off before. \u201cIn case there\u2019s a fire?\u201d She looked down, letting her hair fall in front of her eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYup, and I\u2019m burning up just looking at you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She glanced up at me, her lips pursed. She didn\u2019t say any- thing, didn\u2019t even laugh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUm\u201d\u2014I cleared my throat\u2014\u201cI\u2019m Mason.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She stared for a second and I wondered if she really wasn\u2019t going to respond and tell me her name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m Lace,\u201d she finally said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLace,\u201d I repeated. \u201cThat\u2019s a really pretty name. Which makes sense since you\u2019re a pretty girl.\u201d I grinned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She laughed again, still no smile. She crossed her right foot over her left and pushed some stray purple streaks behind her ear. Her round cheeks were bright red.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, it\u2019s not like I chose it or anything,\u201d she said as the elevator doors opened. We both walked toward the front entrance. I admired the view as she walked in front of me, even though her sweater covered most of her curves. I had an imagination to work with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really didn\u2019t get why she didn\u2019t just say thanks or act flattered or something. Usually pickup lines and compliments worked in my favor, but nothing seemed to work with this girl. \u201cI guess I should be complimenting your parents on it then.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a lame line. This was a poor display.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She turned to face me. Her eyebrows were scrunched together and she glanced sideways, picking at her fingernails. \u201cOkay then,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cleared my throat, aware that I was tanking this interaction, but whatever. \u201cSo, Lace, this is the part where I get your number, right?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my mom watching me from inside the Suburban. Lace stared at me another minute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNice meeting you,\u201d she finally said, before she turned and started walking away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, I see how it is,\u201d I called after her, trying not to let my pride be totally smashed. \u201cPlaying hard to get.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She turned to look at me again once she reached a white Jeep. \u201cNot playing,\u201d she said, just loud enough to hear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She climbed into the car, shut the door, and drove off. No girl had ever turned down the chance to give me her number or had blown me off so completely. What the hell?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I continued to stare at where her car was even though she was gone. My eyes came to rest on my cast, and I felt like even more of a loser than I had in the doctor\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wind blew my hair into my face as I straightened up and pulled my shoulders back. No one rejected Mason Vance.
