Michigan is a peninsula surrounded by water, so I was always intrigued by\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0idea of taking that one step further and living in a place that wasn&#8217;t connected to land at all.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What would you do if you spent the day with Claire? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Claire and I would probably spend\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0whole day riding. We&#8217;d pack snacks to keep in our saddle bags and stop in a clearing to eat. There&#8217;s nothing more relaxing than a\u00a0cold drink after a long trail ride&#8211; when I was younger, that was one of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0only times I was allowed to have soda&#8211; so once we got back to\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0barn and took care of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0horses, we&#8217;d be sure to have one (if Claire had my twelve-year-old tastes she&#8217;d want Pepsi, but at 41 I&#8217;d probably pick a grapefruit seltzer!)<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If Claire were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I think of characters in other middle grade books who experience some otherworldly magic: Lily in Tae Keller&#8217;s\u00a0<i>How to Trap a Tiger,\u00a0<\/i>Alma in Jess Redman&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Quintessence,\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<wbr \/>Leonora in Anna Meriano&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Love Sugar Magic.\u00a0<\/i>These characters could find some connection in their magical experiences.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At one point in\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0development of this story, logging with horses factored more significantly into Claire&#8217;s life, and I did a lot of research about that process. In Vermont, where I lived when I started writing this book, and in Michigan, where I live now, there are multiple loggers who still work this way, and I found it so interesting to read about&#8230; but most of it never ended up in\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0book.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from <em>The Wild Path<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I love\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0moment in Chapter 3 when Claire first realizes that\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0signs she sees in\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0woods point to horses. At\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0end of that chapter, when her\u00a0Mom urges them to head back and Claire thinks: &#8220;every part of my body feels rock-heavy, like it wants to dig in, go back to where we came from and keep looking for what I know I saw&#8221;&#8211;we see a glimpse of confidence that ultimately grows throughout\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0book.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I knew I wanted this story to end with hope, but I didn&#8217;t know quite what that would look like. A former middle and high school English teacher currently working as an educational consultant, Sarah graduated from Grinnell College and the University of Michigan, where she studied English, German, and Education.
