What about a week? A month, year, or forever?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"il\">I<\/span> would happily change places for a few weeks with Stevie Bell from Maureen Johnson\u2019s TRULY DEVIOUS series. She\u2019s a cool character and a great detective, and <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> would love to spend some time at an alternative boarding school in the hills of Vermont! As far as trading lives with someone forever\u2026 <span class=\"il\">I<\/span>\u2019m pretty happy with my life, so <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> think <span class=\"il\">I<\/span>\u2019d have to turn down that opportunity.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What would you do if you spent the day with Dee? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> could hang out with Dee for the day, <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> would totally get her to show me how to record and produce a podcast! <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> love <span class=\"il\">listening<\/span> to podcasts, and <span class=\"il\">I<\/span>\u2019d love to make one of my own someday. Other than that, <span class=\"il\">I<\/span>\u2019d like to go for a long drive with Dee and Sarah in Sarah\u2019s vintage muscle car \u2013 maybe Sarah would even let me drive!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If Dee were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"il\">I<\/span> think Dee would get along great with Mac, the protagonist of my previous mystery KEEP THIS TO YOURSELF. They\u2019ve both been forced into situations where they\u2019<span class=\"il\">re<\/span> expected to play detective, and <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> think they could teach each other a few things! <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> also think they could each use a few new friends, and they\u2019d get along really well.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"il\">I<\/span> did a lot of research into missing persons cases for <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> <span class=\"il\">HOPE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">YOU<\/span>\u2019<span class=\"il\">RE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">LISTENING<\/span>, because <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> wanted to nail down a realistic view of what the \u201caverage\u201d disappearance looks like so that Dee\u2019s podcast \u201cRadio Silent\u201d would feel authentic. One case that was really fascinating to read about was the disappearance of Lord Lucan, a British aristocrat who disappeared after a terrible murder happened on his estate. It wasn\u2019t even remotely the kind of story that fit the vibe of IHYL or \u201cRadio Silent\u201d but it was really interesting to read about!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from <em>I Hope You&#8217;re Listening<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">My favorite quote from <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> <span class=\"il\">HOPE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">YOU<\/span>\u2019<span class=\"il\">RE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">LISTENING<\/span> is the quote Dee uses to end every episode of \u201cRadio Silent\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIs there something <span class=\"il\">you<\/span> can do to help? Listen up. Let\u2019s try.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"il\">I<\/span> think it really encapsulates the message of the book, and it nails down the reason Dee started the podcast in the first place. It\u2019s easy to feel helpless, or to sit back and watch as things unfold. Instead of being a helpless bystander, like Dee was ten years ago when Sibby was abducted, it\u2019s worth asking if there\u2019s something we can do. <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> use this message repeatedly in the book for a reason.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s funny, with my previous mystery KEEP THIS TO YOURSELF, <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> knew from the minute <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> started writing it where the story was going. <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> found that reassuring, and <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> expected that every mystery <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> wrote in the future would work the same way. But it turned out that <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> had the exact opposite experience with <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> <span class=\"il\">HOPE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">YOU<\/span>\u2019<span class=\"il\">RE<\/span> <span class=\"il\">LISTENING<\/span>. The premise came to me first (a teen with an anonymous podcast) but <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> really had no idea what had happened to (Dee\u2019s missing friend) Sibby until <span class=\"il\">I<\/span> had written almost two thirds of the book.
