Thousands more, millions more, stars hiding in places that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had seemed black and blank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They weren&#8217;t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">j<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ust silvery white either. Through the quintescope, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they appeared in startling detail<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were icy blue and molten <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yellow and blazing red, each with a gleaming golden sphere at the center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sky was a box of jewels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sky was a fireworks display that extended and expanded endlessly, forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As old as it was, the quintescope moved at Alma&#8217;s slightest touch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guiding her around the universe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She moon-gazed for a while, following the paths of the craters and pits, then journeyed\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from star to star to star.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She paused on a small, golden-centered copper star. It was sur<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rounded by other stars and it wasn&#8217;t particularly noteworthy except\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that it seemed extra shimmery. Alma imagined, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he watched it, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that each twinkle was a mess<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ag<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you saying, star?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she wondered. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you see me down here?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in an instant, in less than an instant, the star was gone, lost <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a wave of rapidly expanding, color-saturated light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma jerked her head back, and the quintescope swiveled away. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She lunged for it, and pressed her eye against the ring of the eye <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piece, hard enough that she felt its circle imprinting on her skin. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her fingers fumbled with the focus knob and twisted too fast, too far, light smearing across the blackness. She slowed down, turning back, pivoting the quintescope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the star had been was now an ocean of light, vast and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chaotic and as full of dust as the light in the Fifth Point had been. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma knew there was a name for the wild<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terrible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beautiful thing she was witnessing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but she couldn&#8217;t remember what it was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then she saw it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right below the light and dust, streaking down ward, copper and swift and gold-centered<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the star that Alma had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seen before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The star was falling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as she stared, following the path of the light, Alma saw that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was no longer just a star. There was something else where the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gold sphere had been<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a brighter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burning something that made her gasp.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it looked like a person. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It looked like a golden person was falling from the sky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Down, down, down came the star until it was so big and so close <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that Alma pulled away from the quintescope, and there it was, in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">front of her eyes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a cape of fire and a glowing ball and inside of it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer golden but fiery copper, an unmistakably human shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And not just human. A child<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a girl, perhaps. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girl in a star,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma whispered to herself. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ama Starling!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma couldn&#8217;t remember the exact words, but she knew <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ShopKeeper had mentioned Starlings right at the end, right <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when he&#8217;d said so many things she didn&#8217;t quite understand. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if that was what she was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was beneath the clouds now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close to Earth. Alma could make out long hair streaming above her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head and dark places where two eyes and a mouth would be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thin arms and legs were spread out from her small, compact body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world seemed to be silent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma felt as if everything had stopped, absolutely everything, except for this falling, shining, luminous thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the Starling reached the tops of the trees that grew behind Alma&#8217;s new house<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and there was a crashing of leaves and branches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there was a flash like a great bolt of lightning and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boom <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that shook the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing. Alma was left kneeling on the roof in a dark, silent night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She gulped in the air she hadn&#8217;t been breathing. Her hands were shaking. Her whole body was shaking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat should I do?&#8221; she said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and her voice was shaking too<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first answer that came to Alma was this: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save the Starling<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she remembered now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was what the ShopKeeper had said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save the Starling. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She should climb down from the roof. She should <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cross the backyard she had never set foot in and walk to the edge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the woods where the sound and the light had come from<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should go and save the Starling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this answer was overwhelming. This answer made Alma&#8217;s heart pound and her throat tighten. Neighbors would have seen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the light, would have heard the noise. Her parents must have too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if they came outside to investigate? She should not be on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this roof in the middle of the night. She should not have opened <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the door to the Fifth Point. She should not have waited<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have listened to that strange Shopkeeper&#8217;s confusing ramblings about homes and Starlings and elements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should she do? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNothing,&#8221; she answered herself. \u201cThere&#8217;s nothing to be done.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma didn&#8217;t look through the quintescope again. She disassembled it with trembling fingers, shoved the pieces into the soft red <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cushion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and latched the case shut tight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then she crept back through the window, closed it as quietly as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she could, and climbed into bed.
