I had notes of the different outfits people wore, what had and hadn\u2019t been invented yet (for example: no suitcases with wheels!), and common architectural styles. My favorite, though, was researching 1950s slang.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had a planning notebook that I filled with character and setting descriptions, plot outlines, etc., and I had eight pages dedicated to slang. I tried really hard in my first draft to weave in these phrases wherever I could, thinking it would make the book more authentic even if it was really silly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of them worked out, like \u201cno sweat,\u201d \u201cnowheresville,\u201d and \u201clet\u2019s split.\u201d Others, not so much. I had Noah O\u2019Neil call Juniper a \u201cfream,\u201d or someone who doesn\u2019t fit in; Ethan asked Juniper if she has \u201cjets,\u201d or smarts; and Juniper told Ethan to \u201ctear ass,\u201d or go very fast, on his bike during one of their adventures. A lot of these words meant nothing to most people (including me), and made the story feel less real and more like I was just trying to signal at every turn that the book was set in the 50s \u2013 which, to be fair, I was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, it was fun to learn the slang and I really found some gems. My favorites include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ankle-biter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a child<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat city <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a great thing or place<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made in the shade <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 success guaranteed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paper shaker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a cheerleader<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wet rag <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 someone who\u2019s just no fun<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see no world in which I ever say any of these out loud or use them in a future piece of writing.
