There\u2019s a lot of people my age who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be freaked out to be alone at night, but except when I was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eleven and we first moved here, the dark doesn\u2019t scare me. In fact, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s a comfort in the blackness of night. A lot like a soft, heavy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blanket. A lot like my mother\u2019s hugs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Searching for a solution to my problems, I swivel in the chair. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I need to find someone else to work with on my English project. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who has a car, someone who will be easy to meet with, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone who will willingly work with me and someone who is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absolutely on board with what I want to research. This topic means <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world to me\u2014 literally life and death. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My cell pings and I glance down at the text. Glory: You need to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact me. I\u2019m seeing things in your future that concern me. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are things that concern me about my future, too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the corner of my eye, there\u2019s movement. A shadow. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I barely see the blur, and it darts from the living room toward the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stairs that lead to the foyer on the first floor. My heart picks up speed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s past midnight. The time when this house comes alive. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond shadows, I haven\u2019t seen the children since I was a child, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m hungry to see them again. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m up, out of my seat and I follow. A push of a few buttons, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alarm is disarmed and I open the heavy wooden door that separates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me from the rest of house. At the top of the stairs, I strain to look <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down into the darkness. A faint light pushes through the thick <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stained glass over the main front door, creating shadows in the corner. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s silence. So loud that it almost hurts my ears. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children frighten easily so I creep down the stairs, working <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard to distribute my weight to keep the old steps from creaking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and moaning. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do the children see when they frolic around this old <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">house? Do they see their own home, in their own time, back when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they were alive? Are they lost in their happy memories? Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s what I hope for death to be, lost in a dream of joy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I lean my back against the wall, close my eyes and listen. At <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this time of night, at exactly this time, I hear their light footsteps <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tapping against the hardwood. Some nights, I\u2019m lucky and can hear <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their giggles, and on rare nights, back when I was younger, I was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offered the rare jewel of catching sight of more than just the hem of a dress. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I breathe in. I breathe out.
