She\u2019s terrified she\u2019s going to lose her scholarship, so she does something she knows is a bad idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My characters are human which means they always make some not-so-great choices. I love putting them into messy, high stakes situations where everything and everyone they care about can be lost to them forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So even though I love writing tense, emotional scenes, when you ask which scene was my favorite scene to write, I have to say the one where Sabine and her new friend Kevin go to The Broad art museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Broad is a real museum of contemporary art in LA, and Sabine doesn\u2019t like a lot of the art in the collection. She doesn&#8217;t know Kevin very well yet and she\u2019s trying to hide what she feels about the art from him and the other students they came with, but he sees right through her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What made this scene so fun to write is the banter between Kevin and Sabine. Sabine\u2019s been wrapped up in her own drama, but this is the moment when she starts to see there\u2019s much more to Kevin than she realized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of times we\u2019re attracted to shiny objects\u2014bad boys or hot girls\u2014and we don\u2019t see the person who doesn\u2019t appear that exciting, but who has so much more to offer emotionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One last thing about the scene. One of my writer friends absolutely loves how the scene disses some pieces of art at The Broad that people worship. A GIRL CALLED FEARLESS was an ABA Indie Next Pick and won the Young Adult Novel Award 2014 from the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association. A frequent speaker at writing and teen conferences, Catherine received her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and worked as a young adult book buyer for an independent bookstore for seven years. Prior to pursuing a career in publishing, she studied international politics at Georgetown University followed by a master\u2019s degree in business at the University of North Carolina.
