So much. I get so bogged down with tiny inconsequential details. I\u2019ll write, like, \u201cAyla was eating bread with jam,\u201d and then my brain is like, WHOA WHOA WHOA. SLOW DOWN. PUMP THE BRAKES. WHAT KIND OF JAM? And suddenly it\u2019s six hours later and I could write a thesis on 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century jam flavors and fruit preservation techniques and then I go back to the sentence and I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, right, actually it doesn\u2019t matter what kind of jam she\u2019s eating. Nobody cares. Well, I learned my lesson! No more getting lost in the research vortex!\u201d And then three sentences later I do the exact same thing for a throwaway character\u2019s shoes. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Do you have a favorite scene, quote, or moment from <em>Crier\u2019s War<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4207\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaitgoodwin.com\/books\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/criers-war-quote-001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kaitgoodwin.com\/books\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/criers-war-quote-001.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.kaitgoodwin.com\/books\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/criers-war-quote-001-300x59.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kaitgoodwin.com\/books\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/criers-war-quote-001-768x150.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<strong> What is something that we might not know about your main characters?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crier is 5\u201910\u201d and Ayla is 5\u20194\u201d. I had to indulge myself. What else&#8230; Crier writes political essays for fun and Ayla is very handy with a dagger. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How do you feel about LGBTQIA+ rep in your work and how important is it to you to write diverse characters and storylines?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s incredibly important, though I\u2019m not sure how we\u2019re defining \u201cdiversity\u201d here\u2014\u201cdiverse\u201d is sometimes used as an umbrella term for all marginalized identities, sometimes in the context of just gender and sexuality, sometimes in the context of just race and ethnicity, neurodiversity, etc. I want to tell stories that reflect the full spectrum of humanity, but I\u2019m also very aware that I\u2019m a white queer and many, many stories are not mine to tell. So maybe I can populate my stories with people of various marginalized identities (as long as I\u2019m being careful and respectful and doing my due diligence, etc.), but I can\u2019t write a story about the specific experience of being [Marginalization I Don\u2019t Share], the experience of belonging to X culture, things you can only truly understand if you\u2019re an insider. In terms of LGBTQIA+ rep\u2014I don\u2019t have any particular interest in writing non-queer stories. I don\u2019t think I have it in me. In the words of Hayley Kiyoko: \u201cWhether it was gay or not, I made it gay. Because I\u2019m gay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What are some TV shows, movies, and books that would pair well with your book?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love the phrasing of this question\u2014like pairing fine wine with cheese.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TV shows: Honestly, I\u2019m so behind on TV&#8230; I will say I recently fell in love with the new reboot of ROSWELL NEW MEXICO. It actually deals with similar themes\u2014nonhumans vs. humans, forbidden love, loss and the grief\/anger\/bitterness that follows. Also, canonically bisexual aliens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movies: EX MACHINA had its flaws but I did like the overall plot and the whole Turing Test concept, and the android technology was really fascinating and beautifully rendered. Plus it stars Alicia Vikander (my wife) and Oscar Isaac (my platonic husband), so there\u2019s that. Loved the ending, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books: I\u2019ve just started THE MURDERBOT DIARIES by Martha Wells and I\u2019m loving it so far. It explores one of my favorite tropes\u2014Robot Discovers Feelings\u2014in a really gorgeous, nuanced way, and the worldbuilding is so so so good.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Which of your characters do you identify the most with and why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some days Ayla, most days Crier. These days, Nina lives in Los Angeles with her writing partner and their tiny, ill-behaved dog.
