And how people get together, and why, and how outside pressures factor into it. Also, I was blow-drying my hair. You can really only let your mind wander while you blow-dry your hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">How did you choose the names for your characters?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selah\u2019s name changed many, many times. But her name is a Hebrew word that translators think mean \u201cpause\u201d or \u201creflect,\u201d and once I landed on it, I knew it belonged to her. And the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beholder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is crewed by historical creators and collectors of fairy tales and folk tales and myths. I\u2019ll let readers sort out who they are. \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahahaha. I did so much research about horses. None of it made sense to include in the final version of the text\u2014too much detail\u2014but I did not hate goofing around and looking at beautiful photos of horses.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">If Selah were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all: this is maybe one of my favorite questions I\u2019ve ever been asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second: Selah\u2019s a sweetheart. She\u2019s introverted, tends to play by the rules when she can, and cares a ton about her family and her home\u2014but she also does a lot of growing and exploring. So I\u2019d say she\u2019d get along super well with Lara Jean Song from <em>To All The Boys I Loved Before<\/em>, Sophie Hatter from <em>Howl&#8217;s Moving Castle<\/em>, and Genie from <em>The Epic Crush of Genie Lo<\/em>. She would also adore but be slightly intimidated by Gansey from the <em>Raven Cycle<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Do you have any advice you would give to the characters in your book?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly? I would tell Selah she is FINE AS SHE IS, and to give herself time. Time to get more comfortable in ~society~, time to grow into her responsibilities, time to enjoy the stuff that she loves while she\u2019s young. Not, of course, that I\u2019m going to let her grow that slowly. \ud83d\ude08\ud83d\ude08\ud83d\ude08<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">What books would you recommend to your characters and why?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think Selah would take a lot of comfort from <em>The Silver Chair<\/em>, by C.S. Lewis, which is one of my favorites. It\u2019s about doing hard things and being brave and I love it.
