These individuals believe in fate and soul mates and the notion that the universe sends out winged, mostly naked babies to shoot arrows into select single people, thus infecting them with true love that may cause drowsiness and a massive happily-ever-after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you have the cynics, those curmudgeonly souls who call it a \u201cHallmark holiday\u201d and complain that if true love exists, its proclamations should be expressed spontaneously on any random day and without the expectation of gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I am neither\u2014and both\u2014of these people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <em>do <\/em>believe that Valentine\u2019s Day is an overcommercialized Hallmark holiday, but I also think there\u2019s nothing wrong with enjoying the materialistic side effects of the celebration. Bring on the chocolates and flowers, and throw in a gift card to the local bookstore while you\u2019re at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, I believe in the existence of true love. But I strongly suspect that fate and soul mates and love at first sight are concepts created by the same people still waiting for Santa to show up with that puppy they asked for when they were seven years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, I <em>absolutely <\/em>expect love in my life, but there is no way I\u2019m going to sit around and wait for fate to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fate is for suckers. Love is for planners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick stared at me for a solid five seconds before muttering what sounded like <em>Hell no <\/em>as he pulled out his phone and snapped a photo of the insurance card. After that, he insisted on calling the police when my van started smoking. I tried to insist that it was drivable\u2014I needed to get to school and hear my poem, dammit\u2014until the engine went up in flames and the firemen had to put it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ugh, my dad was going to kill me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then my mom was going to pick apart my corpse until there was nothing left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I wasn\u2019t going to have time for Josh\u2019s poem until after first block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d Nick came over from his truck and held out a coat. \u201cI know it doesn\u2019t match your outfit, but it\u2019s warm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to say no because I blamed him for this disaster, but I <em>was <\/em>chilled. My classic pink Ralph Lauren oxford dress had been too cute to cover with a coat, but that\u2019d been before I was standing out in the cold, watching my vehicle become a bonfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks,\u201d I said as I slid into the army-green jacket that nearly went down to my knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick crossed his arms and surveyed the scene of emergency responders cleaning up the wreckage. \u201cAt least you already had a clunker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think you mean \u2018classic,\u2019\u201d I said, even though I hated my creeper van. There was just something about Nick\u2019s attitude\u2014and the fact that he didn\u2019t recognize me\u2014that made me want to argue with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He crossed his arms and said, \u201cYou doing okay here?\u201d I fake-smiled and bit out, \u201cWonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I glanced down at my phone. No notifications. Neither of my parents answered when I tried calling them, which wasn\u2019t surprising. I desperately wanted to text Josh, but the last thing I needed to do was remind Nick that I might\u2019ve been distracted when I hit him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police officer got there quickly after the firemen and was relatively nice as he wrote me the citation that was sure to get me grounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick looked at me as the tow truck disappeared with my van. \u201cYou want a ride? I mean, we\u2019re going to the same place and you\u2019re dressed like <em>that<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked down at my bare legs and brown leather booties, clenching my teeth to keep them from chattering. \u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRidiculously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHey.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He actually grinned at my expression. \u201cI wasn\u2019t impugning your fashion choices\u2014you look very, um, <em>polo player\u2019s girlfriend, <\/em>don\u2019t worry. I was merely referring to your bare legs and the fact that it\u2019s, like, twenty degrees outside. Ride? Yes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I swallowed and buried my frozen nose in the coat collar. It smelled like cold and motor oil. \u201cUm, yeah.
