But it\u2019s two weeks into the year, and there\u2019s still nothing sweet to pack in my lunch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSorry, Felix,\u201d Mom says, standing in front of the open pantry. \u201cNo Oreos.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI put them on the grocery list,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She gives me a tired smile. \u201cI forgot to take the list.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I feel bad complaining. Remembering stuff is hard for Mom lately. So are mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re running later than usual. Mom\u2019s in her pajamas and hasn\u2019t showered yet. She overslept on account of she\u2019s pregnant and spent the whole night getting up to pee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the record, my mom\u2019s not the alien. My sister is. Boo\u2019s not even born yet, and she\u2019s already causing trouble.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s must be super weird to have some invisible being kick your bladder. The other night, Boo had the hiccups and I could actually see my mom\u2019s stomach jump every few seconds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it\u2019s not just Mom\u2019s body. Boo has taken over our house, too. There\u2019s a bunch of baby things and boxes of diapers piling up in the dining room. Even though my sister won\u2019t be here for three more months, there\u2019s a bottle sterilizer hogging space on the kitchen counter. Mom pushes it aside to check the fruit bowl.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got bananas,\u201d Mom tells me. \u201cOr . . . Well, we have brown bananas.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d I tell her. \u201cI\u2019ll buy something at school again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s just enough time for me to finish up my Spanish homework, so I shove my lunch bag into my backpack and sit down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul strolls into the kitchen. When he sees me he says, \u201cA good sleep I trust you had, Padawan.\u201d He\u2019s been saying that ever since the two of us did a <em>Star Wars <\/em>movie marathon a few months back. I give him a thumbs-up and go back to my worksheet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul walks over to Mom and rubs her middle. \u201cHow are my favorite girls this morning?\u201d Lately, his \u201cfavorite girls\u201d are his favorite topic. Boo has invaded Paul\u2019s vocabulary, too. He must have a Pregnancy Word of the Day calendar or something. He drops words like <em>gestation period, amniotic fluid, <\/em>and <em>placenta <\/em>(gross, gross, <em>aaaannd <\/em>gross) into conversations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mom tells Paul his favorite girls are fine, and he gives her stomach one last pat before grabbing himself coffee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGot a busy day?\u201d Paul asks Mom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She tells him she\u2019s got a focus group coming in later at her downtown office.
