Before, a call from Padm\u00e9 would have sent her running for the holoprojector, eager to hear what her friend wanted her to do. But something had changed. After Geonosis, Padm\u00e9 had been uncharacteristically reticent, hiding everything even from Sab\u00e9. She\u2019d disappeared to the lake house on Naboo and hadn\u2019t contacted anyone for weeks. And yes, Sab\u00e9 herself wasn\u2019t always easy to track down, but Padm\u00e9 was a senator. If it was important, she found a way. And now she needed Sab\u00e9 again, and Sab\u00e9 was alarmed to find she was a little bit resentful. What was happening to them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When everything was clean, she went to the holoprojector and turned it on. She had no idea what time it was on Coruscant, and she wasn\u2019t sure how long she\u2019d have to wait for Padm\u00e9 to pick up, but someone would be on the other end of the line, and they\u2019d tell her what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSab\u00e9!\u201d To her surprise, Padm\u00e9\u2019s face appeared in front of her almost immediately. The senator looked good, clearly having recovered from whatever happened to her in the droid foundry, and her tone was normal. \u201cOh, I\u2019m so glad to see you. I\u2019ve missed you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve missed you, too,\u201d Sab\u00e9 said. And it was true. Missing Padm\u00e9 was like missing the sun, and she was currently on a planet with two of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow is Tatooine?\u201d Padm\u00e9 asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHot, dry, and dusty,\u201d Sab\u00e9 told her. \u201cBut we\u2019re making real progress. The locals, the ones I care about, are starting to trust us. We\u2019ve already made a few offworld runs for them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d Padm\u00e9 bit her lip. She was definitely going to ask Sab\u00e9 to leave the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTonra suggested that it fits our cover if I disappear on a longer mission,\u201d Sab\u00e9 said. Padm\u00e9\u2019s relief was immediate. \u201cHe\u2019ll keep the ship, but I can make it to Coruscant from the transport hub here. When we\u2019re done, I can return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll send Captain Mariek for you,\u201d Padm\u00e9 offered, happy to make everything as easy as she could. \u201cThat will make your traveling a bit easier, and I won\u2019t worry about you the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need me to do?\u201d Sab\u00e9 asked. She leaned back in her chair, almost relaxed at how familiar this was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis one\u2019s complicated,\u201d Padm\u00e9 said. \u201cThere\u2019s a mission my faction in the Senate is running, and it has to be me who goes. Only, I can\u2019t disappear from the Senate, because people will notice. I need you to come to Coruscant and be Senator Amidala.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All thoughts of relaxation fled. Senator Amidala was so different. There was no makeup to hide behind, no bulky dresses to use as a physical barrier. This wouldn\u2019t be a normal switch. She\u2019d have to mimic Padm\u00e9 on the floor of the Galactic Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWho knows?\u201d Sab\u00e9 asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSenator Organa,\u201d Padm\u00e9 said. It wasn\u2019t a surprise. He had seen through their disguise early on but had never told anyone about it. Sab\u00e9 rather liked him. \u201cAnd Mon Mothma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was a very short list, and the Chancellor wasn\u2019t on it. \u201cThis is going to be challenging,\u201d Sab\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the bright side, I\u2019ve just brought on two new handmaidens,\u201d Padm\u00e9 said. Her voice shuddered a bit referring to the tragedy as a bright side. \u201cYou can switch out with one of them easily enough to relearn your way around the&nbsp; Senate, and then you and I can switch places for a couple of days before I leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sab\u00e9 was already mentally packing her trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll meet Mariek on the transport hub tomorrow, if she can make it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll make the arrangements,\u201d Padm\u00e9 told her. She hesitated, then smiled. \u201cI am so glad we\u2019ll get to see each other again for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo am I,\u201d said Sab\u00e9. It was the truth. \u201cIt\u2019ll be just like old times. I\u2019d better go pack.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Padm\u00e9 had been fully intending to tell Sab\u00e9 the whole story, everything from seeing Anakin again through the time at the Lars homestead and their captivity on Geonosis, including the wedding. But then Sab\u00e9 had said \u201cjust like old times,\u201d and her resolve had crumbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anakin hadn\u2019t been able to see her when he\u2019d returned to Coruscant. He\u2019d only been on the planet long enough to see the Chancellor, and to get his next assignment before he and Obi-Wan shipped out to the front. They hadn\u2019t yet set up a way to communicate surreptitiously, and Padm\u00e9 had no reason to contact him through official channels. She knew that sort of thing was to be expected; it was why they had traveled separately back from the lake house, but it still stung. She accepted that he would have a job to do, just as she would, but she hadn\u2019t expected reality to throw it all in her face quite so quickly. When she had a moment, she would ask C-3PO if there was a way he could securely link to R2-D2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time with Sab\u00e9 was exactly what she needed. She would use it to find her way forward, balancing the old with the new. It would be like old times. They would learn to be each other\u2019s mirror again, something they hadn\u2019t done in years and had never tried on this scale. They would spend time together and it would be easy and fun, and they would have their work to keep them busy. When they had to separate for Padm\u00e9 to go on the mission, she would know that Sab\u00e9 would be waiting for her when she came back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Sab\u00e9 arrived, Padm\u00e9 greeted her with a smile. She introduced her to Ell\u00e9 and Mote\u00e9, and they all sat down with Dorm\u00e9, Typho, Mariek, and the other guards for the Naboo-style dinner Padm\u00e9 had planned to welcome Sab\u00e9 back. There were brightly colored stuffed peppers and five-blossom bread, and berries from the Lake Country soaked in rum custard. As she watched her friends eat, laughing and talking with one another, Padm\u00e9 was happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wished Anakin were here. That was the only thing that kept the night from being perfect. She missed him, and not even Sab\u00e9 could make her feel better. It was strange, to love two people so much, so differently. She didn\u2019t quite understand it, and she wasn\u2019t sure how to make it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someday, she would figure out how to put both halves of her life together. Someday, she would make the political and the personal more cohesive. Someday, she wouldn\u2019t keep them so divided. Someday, Anakin would sit at this table, too.
