I plop into the chair next<br \/>to her and start unpacking my lunch.<br \/>\u201cHuh?\u201d she asks, pulling out ear buds that I hadn\u2019t noticed under her mane of curls.<br \/>\u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to listen to anything too loudly,\u201d I remind her. It\u2019s a rule she came up with<br \/>anyway. She needs to pre- serve her perfect hearing for when she\u2019s a famous record producer\/<br \/>singer\/DJ. \u201cBut if you are going to listen to something . . .\u201d I hold up my phone.<br \/>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d Theo asks, sitting opposite us.<br \/>\u201cPossibly my audition piece,\u201d I tell him.<br \/>Evita sits up a little straighter and puts her game face on.<br \/>\u201cHand it over.\u201d<br \/>\u201cWhy does she get to hear it first?\u201d Theo asks.<br \/>\u201cGet over here,\u201d Evita tells him, holding out one of her ear buds.<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s obviously just a MIDI file, but, you know, I could do it on viola. With maybe piano, but it\u2019s<br \/>kind of . . .\u201d I gnaw on the side of my thumb.<br \/>Theo shoves between us, balancing precariously across our two chairs. I hand Evita the phone.<br \/>She hits play. The piece is two and a half minutes.<br \/>A long two and a half minutes.<br \/>Beyond an occasional bob of her head, Evita makes no show of emotion. Theo, thankfully, is<br \/>much less opaque. First, he raises his eyebrows at me. Then he mouths \u201cWow!\u201d He\u2019s probably<br \/>at that set of arpeggios from the viola that melt under those big chords.<br \/>\u201cWhat are you listening to?\u201d Theo\u2019s girlfriend, Lily Ann, asks as she sits down with her lunch<br \/>tray.<br \/>Theo puts a finger up, telling her to wait.<br \/>When it\u2019s over, Evita finally smiles. \u201cYes, Lacey. Absolutely. We should record it ASAP.\u201d<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s great,\u201d Theo says, throwing an arm around me and giv- ing me a squeeze.<br \/>I can\u2019t keep the smile from my face. \u201cAwesome.\u201d<br \/>\u201cYou nailed it,\u201d Theo says as he stands and joins Lily Ann on the other side of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I listen?\u201d Lily Ann asks.<br \/>\u201cOf course,\u201d I say with a forced smile.<br \/>\u201cSo, if we can record this today after school, we can send it<br \/>in by Wednesday. Or even tomorrow. You know I don\u2019t mind pulling an all-nighter,\u201d Evita says.<br \/>\u201cThat\u2019s not necessary,\u201d I tell her. \u201cLet\u2019s just do it Saturday.
