He waited patiently as the spine-rattling thump of heavy bass pulsed from inside.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solid iron door opened with a groan.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A woman with short red hair and black lipstick stood before him.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHello,\u201d the stranger said, his eyes hidden by the brim of his hat.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The woman snapped her gum and gave him the once-over. \u201cYeah?\u201d she asked, not too kindly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stranger grinned, and it was a wide grin that seemed to take up his whole face.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m here to see a friend,\u201d he said. \u201cHis name is Nightmare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chapter-one\"><b>Chapter&nbsp;<\/b><b>One<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa rested his head against the cool glass of the plane\u2019s window. He was exhausted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flight to Alabama was a grueling sixteen hours, and the last leg of the journey was quickly coming to an end.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flight attendant, a very tall man with a Southern accent, came through the first-class cabin. \u201cMore orange juice, sir?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa shook himself awake. \u201cNo,\u201d he said, rubbing his eyes. \u201cUm, no thank you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery well, sir. We will be landing shortly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, T\u2019Challa thought.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though he was the Prince of Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation hidden from prying eyes on the continent of Africa, he had to settle for a first-class seat on a regular flight\u2014although the hot towels, slippers, and salted cashews were an unexpected treat. Of course, he could have begged his father, T\u2019Chaka, the ruling Black Panther and King of Wakanda, to hire a private jet for the trip. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa thought, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where would we have landed? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They couldn\u2019t just fly into an ordinary airport. The jet would attract too much attention. Air traffic control would probably think it was a UFO and shoot it down.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, his seatmate, a businessman from a place called Dover, Delaware, tried to engage T\u2019Challa in conversation several times:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhere in Africa did you say you were from again?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHave you ever seen a rhino?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat kind of business is your family in?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans sure do ask a lot of personal questions, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa thought.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only answer he gave, after much persistence, was that the family business was \u201cmining.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deafening screech jolted T\u2019Challa fully awake. He peered through the window. A flight crew in orange vests swarmed the tarmac, waving their batons. T\u2019Challa released a satisfying sigh. He had pestered his father for weeks to allow him to visit his friends Zeke and Sheila in America. Sheila was spending the summer in Alabama with her grandmother, and Zeke had come in a few days before T\u2019Challa was scheduled to arrive. They had planned it out for weeks through video calls.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, after much back-and-forth, and his father\u2019s insistence on T\u2019Challa being careful, the King of Wakanda had allowed T\u2019Challa three weeks\u2019 vacation. T\u2019Challa was ecstatic. He couldn\u2019t wait to see his friends again.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now he was here.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wondered, not for the first time, what surprises the trip would hold.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside the International Arrivals gate, T\u2019Challa was met by a wave of sweltering heat\u2014not the dry and pleasant heat of Wakanda, but a stifling, humid heat that made the collar of his shirt stick to the back of his neck.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Footsteps sounded behind him.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He spun around quickly, his defense training kicking in.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A girl with tiny freckles and curly hair stood in front of him. She smiled, revealing straight white teeth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWelcome to Beaumont, Alabama,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa exhaled a sigh of relief. \u201cSheila!\u201d he said, giving her an awkward hug. Her hair smelled like strawberry shampoo.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t believe you\u2019re here,\u201d his friend Zeke added, pushing his glasses up on his nose. \u201cI mean, all the way from Wakanda!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke raised his hand for a high five, and T\u2019Challa returned it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke was skinny, with close-cropped hair, chunky glasses, and a quick wit T\u2019Challa had seen on several occasions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs that the only bag you brought?\u201d Sheila asked, looking at the glossy black leather shoulder bag he carried.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUh, yeah,\u201d T\u2019Challa replied. \u201cI didn\u2019t bring a lot, and I didn\u2019t want to check it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila fanned herself with a hand and put on an exaggerated Southern accent. \u201cWell, it\u2019s so hot here, all you\u2019ll need is shorts and a T-shirt, anyway.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke waved her off. \u201cShe\u2019s been talking like that since I got here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa chuckled. The only Southern accents he\u2019d ever heard were from old American TV shows he had watched in Wakanda. \u201cSo when did you get here?\u201d he asked Sheila.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAbout a week ago,\u201d Sheila replied. \u201cI haven\u2019t been here in years! The last time was with my parents and I was like five or six.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat about you, Zeke?\u201d T\u2019Challa asked.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThree days ago. I\u2019ve been researching various food groups.\u201d He licked his lips.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila poked a sideways thumb in Zeke\u2019s direction. \u201cAll he\u2019s been doing is eating.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a growing boy,\u201d Zeke said, patting his flat stomach. \u201cPlus, there\u2019s a whole lot of food I have to try out!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa chuckled again. He\u2019d heard how good Southern cooking was, and he couldn\u2019t wait to try some.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke eyed T\u2019Challa\u2019s bag with curiosity. \u201cSo . . . what\u2019d you bring? Some secret high-tech gadgets? The suit? Please tell me you brought the suit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa suppressed a groan.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Zeke and Sheila had found out exactly who T\u2019Challa really was on his first trip to America. His father had sent him to Chicago due to a looming threat in Wakanda. Once in the Windy City with his friend M\u2019Baku, they were enrolled at South Side Middle School with fake names. His father didn\u2019t want any of his enemies getting word that his son was in America.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He soon became fast friends with Zeke and Sheila, and together, they stopped an evil force that had put the whole school and the world itself in danger. It didn\u2019t take long for his friends to discover that he was more than an ordinary exchange student from Kenya, which was his cover. When the threat became so serious that T\u2019Challa had to wear the panther suit his father had given him for protection, Zeke flipped out and wouldn\u2019t stop talking about it. It seemed that he was still obsessed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, Zeke, I brought the suit,\u201d T\u2019Challa confessed. \u201cMy father insisted. But he did say to use caution. He doesn\u2019t want me getting involved in some kind of dangerous adventure like last time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke raised a mischievous eyebrow. \u201cYou never know though, right?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa shot Zeke a cautious smile.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeaking of which,\u201d Sheila put in, \u201chow exactly did you convince your father to let you come to America again?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt took some pestering,\u201d T\u2019Challa replied. \u201cBut I finally wore him down.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa thought back to the moment. At first his father was totally against the idea, but when T\u2019Challa reminded him of how he had handled an unexpected threat on his last trip, and the fact that he was now a year older and wiser, the King of Wakanda nodded thoughtfully and folded his hands together in front of him. It also helped that Queen Ramonda was on T\u2019Challa\u2019s side. \u201cT\u2019Challa needs to see more of the outside world,\u201d she had said. \u201cThe best time to do it is now, when he\u2019s young.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, his father finally relented.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRemember who you are,\u201d he demanded of T\u2019Challa. \u201cYou are a representative of your nation. Use the wisdom and judgment you have been taught. Do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let me down.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa\u2019s father had spoken quietly, but the strength behind the words was clear. There was no other way to interpret it:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not get into trouble.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cC\u2019mon,\u201d Sheila said, pulling T\u2019Challa away. \u201cMr. Perkins is waiting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMr. Perkins?\u201d T\u2019Challa asked.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s like a handyman,\u201d Sheila replied. \u201cHe does a lot of stuff for my gramma, like cutting grass and fixing stuff. He\u2019s waiting for us in the parking lot.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Perkins, an older Black man with graying hair, didn\u2019t speak much but played gospel songs on the car radio. T\u2019Challa hadn\u2019t heard anything like it before, but some of the melodies reminded him of Wakandan folk songs back home. He closed his eyes and let the music wash over him, which almost sent him into sleep several times.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a short drive, Mr. Perkins dropped them off in front of a quaint yellow house with a nice green lawn and giant magnolia trees on either side.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThanks, Mr. Perkins,\u201d Sheila said. \u201cWe really appreciate it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTell Miss Rose I\u2019ll be by next week to get rid of that tree stump out back, okay?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSure thing,\u201d Sheila replied. \u201cThanks again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa gave Mr. Perkins a smile and a nod, then made his way out of the car.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGet ready for a wet grandma kiss,\u201d Sheila warned T\u2019Challa.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When T\u2019Challa and his friends stepped inside, he was immediately met by an aroma that made his mouth water. He wasn\u2019t sure what it was, but he couldn\u2019t wait to find out. The living room was large and comfortable-looking, with a big sofa, several wingback chairs, and a large dining area with a massive china cabinet. Pictures of family members were framed on the walls, and fresh flowers sat above a fancy fireplace. A bookshelf took up one wall. T\u2019Challa smiled. Sheila was a big reader and, judging by the numerous books on display, her grandmother was, too. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must run in the family, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he thought.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething smells good,\u201d Zeke said as he sniffed the air.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that moment, a woman appeared from the back of the house. She had short, tightly woven braids and wore a dress printed with bold geometric patterns of green and yellow, which reminded T\u2019Challa of the colorful clothing people wore back home.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou must be T\u2019Challa,\u201d she said, approaching.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa gulped at the mention of his name, but then realized he didn\u2019t need to keep it a secret. She didn\u2019t know where he was really from, of course, only that he was a friend of Zeke and Sheila\u2019s\u2014one they had met in Chicago as an \u201cexchange student.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before he knew it, Sheila\u2019s grandmother hugged him and planted a kiss on his cheek. \u201cNice to meet you, T\u2019Challa,\u201d she said, breaking the embrace. \u201cYou can call me Miss Rose.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNice to meet you, too, Miss Rose.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a moment of silence. T\u2019Challa stuck his hands in his pockets, not knowing what else to do with them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell,\u201d Miss Rose finally said, stepping back with hands on hips. \u201cWho\u2019s hungry?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had attended a lot of feasts in Wakanda, but Miss Rose\u2019s table was a sight to behold. Zeke pointed everything out. \u201cWe got catfish, corn muffins, short ribs, baked mac and cheese, fried okra, boiled peanuts, hush puppies, kale, succotash, red beans and rice, and sweet tea.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd some Wow Burgers,\u201d Sheila added. \u201cThey\u2019re made from plants.\u201d She was a vegetarian but was considering becoming a pescatarian after trying baked salmon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYuck,\u201d Zeke complained. \u201cWho wants fake meat?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s healthier,\u201d Sheila shot back.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke shook his head and reached for another piece of fish.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa watched them go back and forth like this for a few minutes. He grinned. This is what they were always like, he remembered. They\u2019d argue, joke, and tease each other for hours, but deep down, they were the best of friends, and would do anything for each other if push came to shove. They had both proved that on T\u2019Challa\u2019s last trip to America.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis all looks delicious,\u201d T\u2019Challa said, digging into a piece of hot fried fish. The flaky, succulent meat melted in his mouth. He smiled and savored the taste. The food in Wakanda was very good but also a little too healthy for T\u2019Challa\u2019s liking\u2014lots of green, leafy plants and lean meats. Any chance he could get to try out new flavors would not be passed up. When he and his friend M\u2019Baku had first come to Chicago the year before, they ate everything in the hotel mini-fridge and M\u2019Baku got sick from too much chocolate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke devoured the food like he hadn\u2019t eaten in weeks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Rose looked at him for a long moment. \u201cChild,\u201d she said, leaning back in her chair and crossing her arms. \u201cI don\u2019t know where you put it all.\u201d She shook her head. \u201cSkinny as a beanpole.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt all goes to my brain,\u201d Zeke replied, mouth full.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, you better eat more,\u201d Sheila snapped, \u201cbecause there\u2019s a whole bunch of empty space in there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even T\u2019Challa had to laugh at that, and he did without hesitation. Zeke mumbled a retort, but Sheila had already won the round.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa let out a breath and sat back in his chair. He was glad to be here. His time in Wakanda was always full of responsibilities, like meeting with his father\u2019s advisors and attending weekly briefings on Wakanda\u2019s latest concerns. He also had to oversee a group of gifted students in Wakanda\u2019s Academy for Young Leaders, boys and girls who would one day run the government. He did get a little overwhelmed now and then. After all, he had just turned thirteen and still enjoyed Wakanda\u2019s lush forests and crystal-clear rivers. He loved tending to the old and disabled animals in the sanctuary, feeding giraffes and rhinos who responded to his soft words and gentle touch. But his father never forgot to remind him of his place and duty in their powerful nation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will lead one day, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he would say, his voice deep and full of strength. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is our destiny.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo what do y\u2019all have planned for the summer?\u201d Miss Rose asked, bringing T\u2019Challa back to the moment. \u201cVacation doesn\u2019t last forever, you know.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa\u2019s ears perked up at her Southern twang\u2014it was the same tone Sheila had tried to imitate, but this was the real deal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila reached in her jeans pocket and took out her phone. \u201cWell, I\u2019ve got it all right here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe\u2019s a planner,\u201d Zeke said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila scrolled through her phone. \u201cTomorrow it\u2019s the Alabama State Fair. Then I was thinking about a canoe trip on the Tuscaloosa River, and then there\u2019s the botanical\u2014\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs this just one day,\u201d Zeke cut in, \u201cor over the whole summer?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s start with the state fair tomorrow,\u201d Sheila replied, ignoring Zeke\u2019s snarky attitude, \u201cand then we\u2019ll go from there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSounds like a plan,\u201d Miss Rose said. She turned to T\u2019Challa. \u201cWhat about you, young man? What are you looking forward to?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa thought on that a moment. He hoped he could do as much as possible on the trip, but the only thing they had really planned out beforehand was arriving in Alabama around the same time. \u201cWell,\u201d he said, searching for a good answer. \u201cIt\u2019s just fun to see someplace different.\u201d He shrugged. \u201cI don\u2019t know. I guess I\u2019m up for anything!\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Rose cocked her head. \u201cSheila said you\u2019re from Kenya? So what\u2019s that like? I\u2019d love to see the motherland one day.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke and Sheila glanced at T\u2019Challa, wondering what he would say. He didn\u2019t want to lie to this nice lady, but he thought he should keep any mention of Wakanda to himself. Most Americans were under the perception that Wakanda was a poor country in need of global aid, but that was all a facade, as Zeke and Sheila knew very well. T\u2019Challa thought it would be easier to just say he was from Kenya, rather than make up stories about how poor Wakanda was. That seemed more of a lie than saying he was from Kenya, to his thinking. He shifted in his chair and scratched his head. \u201cWell,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s always hot there, like here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Rose chuckled. \u201cTell me something I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa swallowed hard. \u201cThere are all kinds of animals. Lots of, um, things to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke snorted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cT\u2019Challa\u2019s family is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wealthy,\u201d Sheila said, which made T\u2019Challa stiffen. \u201cHis father is very high up in the government.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa shot Sheila a look, and Zeke stifled a laugh. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come to think of it, though, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa realized, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she isn\u2019t lying.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, really?\u201d Miss Rose said, seemingly impressed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, that\u2019s very exciting. Guess some of us are just born lucky, huh?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUm, yeah,\u201d T\u2019Challa said quietly. \u201cI guess so.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should see T\u2019Challa wrestle,\u201d Zeke said. \u201cLast year, he pinned our old gym teacher, Mr. Blevins, in like thirty seconds flat! It was fast, like . . . <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflexes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa gulped.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan\u2019t say I\u2019m a fan of wrestling,\u201d Miss Rose put in. \u201cWhy do boys always want to fight?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the eternal question,\u201d Sheila said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa sat through this whole episode trying to keep a smile. His friends were really giving him a good ribbing. It was great to see them again, he realized. He had truly missed them, even if they were putting him on the spot.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOof,\u201d Zeke said, pushing his plate away and settling back. \u201cI\u2019m stuffed.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u2019Challa breathed easier, relieved that the joking was finally at an end.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeke\u2019s eyes roamed over the remaining food on the table. \u201cUm, what\u2019s for dessert?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dessert was a choice of peach cobbler or pecan pie, topped with Blue Bell ice cream, one of the South\u2019s tastiest treats. T\u2019Challa chose the peach cobbler and ate every bite until he felt his stomach was about to burst.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afterward, Sheila led T\u2019Challa and Zeke to their room.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a small space with bunk beds and a shaggy orange carpet that looked a hundred years old. Zeke had already claimed the top bunk. The room had been vacant since Sheila\u2019s two uncles\u2014Miss Rose\u2019s sons\u2014moved out long ago.
