On the desk is a typewriter and a note, \u201cFinish writing Eyes of the Forest or else!\u201d That\u2019s the name of his much-delayed book, the final in his epic fantasy series, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swords and Shadows<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Haldon has been kidnapped by Derrick, his biggest fan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To research the book, I bought a pair of leg shackles, used a cable to fasten them to my treadmill desk, and then snapped them around my ankles. I even walked in them (a treadmill desk is just what it sounds like &#8211; a desk with a treadmill underneath) to make sure they wouldn\u2019t hurt my fictional character\u2019s ankles too much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg shackles are made just like handcuffs, only on a slightly bigger scale. They open with the same kind of key. There are several ways to get out of handcuffs with a small piece of metal. I\u2019ve done it with bobby pins, binder clips, and parts of a windshield wiper.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what is a typewriter but a bunch of metal parts?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I took a pair of handcuffs and several sample pieces of metal to a typewriter repair shop near my house. The owner, Don Read, gamely helped me look over typewriters to see if there was some part my enterprising fictional fiction writer could snap off to use to get out of his shackles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we even found one! The ribbon vibrator was just the perfect size and shape. I left thinking I had solved my problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But back on my own treadmill desk, the reality of my fiction set in. My main character writes high fantasy, not thrillers. He knows everything about medieval weapons, ranging from dirks to double-bladed axes to the misericorde (a long narrow knife that was used to deliver a merciful death to a gravely wounded knight).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ratcheting handcuffs were invented in 1912. Would he really figure out how to get out? Probably not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I had to think of a different way for Haldon to escape.
