Huge success. HUGE. Kiss-and-cry backstage, then in the foyer with all our dumbstruck parents still waving their glitter signs and autographed programs, their hair crazy with Robotics Club confetti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cast-party time. Plan A is go crazy at Ashlyn\u2019s\u2014part <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deux<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but cast + crew + hangers-on = way too many people. Wouldn\u2019t want anything smashed, broken, or spilled. So Miss Jenn suggests we do what East High musical casts have always done: go to Denny\u2019s on West 500th and pretend it\u2019s a diner on the corner of Hollywood and Vine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we can make our school gym into a theater and a skateboarder into our star, then we can turn a Denny\u2019s in Salt Lake City into Radio City Music Hall\u2014especially when E.J.\u2019s father is paying for all the milkshakes and onion rings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re all there (in this together, right?) screeching and singing and making Miss Jenn do her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is that the last apple?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> line again when my phone dings. It\u2019s not my sweet Seb, because he\u2019s holding court nearby\u2014still in his Sharpay makeup\u2014reprising his big number with the help of some built-in plastic seating and E.J.\u2019s knee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s something much, much better. An <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HSM <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alert!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picked out the colors for your dressing room yet?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One week till the HSM Convention in Jackson Hole!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What. The. Wildcats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did I miss this? I\u2019ve been so consumed with our own show\u2014choreography, drama, homecoming, Miss Jenn almost getting fired, the theater burning down, break-ups, make-ups, more drama, having to go on as a last-minute understudy and say things like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014I haven\u2019t been paying attention to my <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HSM <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alerts. I didn\u2019t want to mess with the flow and now: Oh no!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMiss Jenn.\u201d I grab her arm and she twirls so fast she takes out half the basketball team with her mermaid waves. \u201cWe have to do this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She stares at my phone, her blue eyes wide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNext weekend?\u201d she says, and pulls out her own phone. It has a green cover to remind her of when she was the understudy for Glinda in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wicked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014I think it was in Peoria. Miss Jenn is pretty speedy with Google searches: You\u2019d never guess she grew up in the old flip-phone days when people still used paper maps and never took pictures of their food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPanels,\u201d she says, scrolling with one pink fingernail. \u201cVocal workshops. Choreography workshops. Cosplay. And . . . oh! Oh!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is it, Miss Jenn?\u201d She looks like she\u2019s about to faint. That, or hyperventilate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLucas Grabeel,\u201d she whispers. \u201cLucas Grabeel is going to be there, in person. Not a dream, Carlos. Actually in person!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUm, a dream?\u201d I ask, and Miss Jenn whips her phone away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow?\u201d There are more curly fries coming. Nobody leaves a party when curly fries are on the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI mean, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have to go. To Jackson. Help me up.\u201d Miss Jenn elbows Seb off his perch and waves her hands to get everyone\u2019s attention. This doesn\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHey! Everyone! Quiet!\u201d E.J. shouts in his best captain-of-everything voice, but that also doesn\u2019t work. Some of the chorus-line tap-dancing doesn\u2019t work, though it does bring the manager out to ask us to \u201cMind the floors, kids.\u201d And Gina leaping so high in the air she practically brushes the ceiling with her fingertips\u2014no, that doesn\u2019t work either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally Kourtney clambers up next to Miss Jenn and starts singing \u201cI Can\u2019t Take My Eyes Off of You\u201d at the top of her voice. Everyone\u2019s whooping and clapping and then Kourtney stops mid-line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMiss Jenn has something to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeech! Speech!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot a speech,\u201d says Miss Jenn. I haven\u2019t seen her face this pale since the day the principal wanted to fire her. \u201cAn opportunity. You know how I always say to trust the process?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More clapping and whooping. We have to shush everyone all over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, sometimes you have to trust providence as well. You have to trust fate. You have to trust that the universe will provide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHas she got a Broadway callback or something?\u201d Seb mutters in my ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not leaving, Miss Jenn?\u201d calls Nini. It\u2019s the first time she\u2019s taken her eyes off Ricky since we got here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot leaving, Nini. Going. We\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo Disneyland?\u201d asks Big Red, and everyone laughs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo Jackson Hole,\u201d Miss Jenn announces, and no one\u2019s laughing or whooping now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSkiing?\u201d someone says, but no one looks too enthusiastic. They\u2019re all thinking about the curly fries, which are\u2014let\u2019s face it\u2014more exciting than Miss Jenn\u2019s announcement. She\u2019s selling it the wrong way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou guys, wait!\u201d I shout. \u201cIt\u2019s a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High School Musical <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">convention\u2014in Jackson Hole. Next weekend!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now everyone\u2019s talking. People are practically bouncing off the walls. I wish they\u2019d put this amount of energy into their dance rehearsals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt would be the most amazing thing ever,\u201d Ashlyn says. \u201cMeet-and-greets with some of the original cast and crew? Wow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut how would we get there?\u201d Natalie asks. I hope she\u2019s not planning to bring her emotional-support hamster. The last thing we need is for that thing to escape in another state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d says Ashlyn. \u201cI mean, E.J. can drive because he\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can drive the school van,\u201d says Miss Jenn. \u201cMr. Mazzara gets it all the time for his robotics whatnots. I\u2019ll send permission slips to all your parents. I mean, they have to say yes. After seeing you all on the stage tonight\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, the gym,\u201d says Natalie. \u201cStrictly speaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019ll be a theater field trip,\u201d Miss Jenn continues. \u201cA celebration of our amazing show. Research and nourishment for our creative souls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She starts wobbling on her high heels with excitement, and Ricky helps her down from the chair. He\u2019s beaming so wide, his face almost splits in two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have to make it happen,\u201d he tells her, and the dog tag around his neck glints in the fluorescent light. Since when does Ricky Bowen wear necklaces?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you think Principal Gutierrez will agree?\u201d Nini asks. Her face is still shining from the night\u2019s success. I mean, we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kill out there tonight. \u201cWill we have to take time off school?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe really can\u2019t,\u201d Natalie tells Miss Jenn. \u201cWe have tests, and after school we have to rehearse every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natalie\u2019s a killjoy, but she\u2019s right. We\u2019ve promised to do a charity show on Christmas Eve to raise money; we have to help rebuild the school\u2019s burnt-out theater, after the fire that was (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whisper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) caused by Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazzara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd it will take us so long to get there,\u201d Natalie says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFive hours,\u201d E.J. reads from his phone. \u201cThat\u2019s the driving time. It\u2019s nothing. I\u2019ve driven farther for archery lessons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlus two hours when we get stuck in the snow,\u201d says Ashlyn. \u201cYou know, after the blizzard rolls in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re driving a few hours north,\u201d I tell her, \u201cnot taking the Donner Pass.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo we leave right after school next Friday,\u201d says Miss Jenn, eyes fixed on some distant spot, as though she\u2019s about to begin a power ballad. \u201cAnd if we limit ourselves to one rest stop, we\u2019ll make it in time for some of the opening sessions that night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt ends on Saturday night,\u201d Kourtney says, scrolling down the site that practically every one of us is reading right now. \u201cThat\u2019s a shame. The final session is a group sing-along.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t need to sing it,\u201d Ricky agrees, grinning at Nini. \u201cWe just lived it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For someone who totally missed the boat on the phenomenon that is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HSM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014i.e., did not grow up watching it with his mom, singing it in the car, and reenacting dance moves on the down-low in our high school cafeteria\u2014Ricky is all about it now. I used to think his feet were glued to his skateboard. Maybe it\u2019s because being in the musical brought him and Nini back together, and he\u2019s already thinking about the spring musical and his next chance to stare into her eyes under the spotlight. He better watch out: E.J. may be over his selfless kick by then. Seniors in their last semester can get grabby with roles. They come over all sentimental about leaving school and this being their Last Chance Ever. Ricky should be on his guard. I mean, hasn\u2019t he seen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HSM3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Jenn mutters something about going back to work right away to e-mail all our parents and break into the admin office to book the van. I hope she\u2019s joking about that last part. She\u2019s out the door before we can stop her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s even a songwriting workshop,\u201d Ashlyn says to no one in particular, smiling at her phone. \u201cI have to do that. I have to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t see any stage-makeup workshops,\u201d Kourtney says, and Nini mock-punches her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to go to one of the singing workshops,\u201d she tells Kourtney. \u201cPeople need to hear your voice.
