For the first time ever, he has actual friends to hang out with. Catherine-Lucille and D. A. will both be at Camp I Can with Clark, and C. L. has already promised to induct him into her exclusive camp club\u2014the one for campers who know everything there is to know about the world of Monsters and how Stuffies protect kids from them. And now that he knows (or suspects . . . very strongly) that his grandma-made Stuffy, Foon, heroically saved his own father from a horrible fate, Clark is obviously bringing Foon to camp along with him.<br \/>\nBut once Clark gets to camp, he and his friends discover things are off. There are strange, gooey findings in some of the bunks, the adults are acting weird, and, worst of all, their Stuffies and dolls go missing right at the moment they need them the most\u2014when they go on the intersession camping trip and end up trapped in a creepy old cabin. What Clark and his friends don\u2019t know, and what the mighty Foon soon discovers, is that the Monsters have launched a revenge campaign against Foon\u2014a campaign that entails sucking the very life out of Clark. style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sucks <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt just isn\u2019t the same,\u201d D.A. agreed. \u00a0 \u201cThe food is terrible-er.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, I\u2019ve been coming here for eight years,\u201d James said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever tasted anything as bad as that shepherd pie tonight.\u00a0 For real.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverything\u2019s off \u2018cause they\u2019re missing, like, half the people who work here,\u201d Saneema said, making a face.\u00a0 \u201cMy parents will totally not send me here next year if this keeps up.\u00a0 Especially if it\u2019s mono or the flu or noro virus or something that everyone\u2019s getting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt least Miz Shirley is still here,\u201d Scooter said.\u00a0 \u201cI know she\u2019s just a secretary but she\u2019s the one who really holds the camp together.\u00a0 Plus she\u2019s so nice.\u00a0 She\u2019s the one who always hides the Purple Platypus,\u201d she added in a whisper to Clark.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be a secret, but it\u2019s totally her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd what about all the slime?\u201d D.A. asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slime sighting,\u201d Catherine-Lucille said.\u00a0 \u201cIn Sunfish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy old cabin!\u201d Clark squeaked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo far the administration has said it\u2019s an unusual fungal bloom, or bat vomit, or, my favorite: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a prank.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA prank that smells like butt and ruins your stuff?\u00a0 Seems a little hardcore,\u201d Saneema said with a frown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOk, like, this should have been part of old business, I guess, but I think it\u2019s relevant,\u201d Scooter said.\u00a0 \u201cLast session I found my Funko Pop Astrid and my stuffed anomalacaris canadiensis on the floor near my bunk near a pile of\u2014man, I don\u2019t know what it was.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t slime, exactly, but it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weird.\u00a0 Dirt and little bits of things\u2014none of it made sense. Sharp and ugly and gross and springy.\u00a0 And it smelled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYours sounds like one of the lesser Monsters,\u201d Catherine-Lucille said. \u201cA crowd of them, maybe.\u00a0 Like Fegs.\u00a0 Did you see the photo I sent you guys from the Mo-fank forum?\u00a0 You can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see the shine of their eyeballs from the flash.\u00a0 Usually their remains disappear, but not if, like, there were a ton of them.\u00a0 Your guys must have really taken an army out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlso? Scooter?\u201d Saneema said.\u00a0 \u201cYou are really freaking weird.\u00a0 Why can\u2019t you just have a bear or a doll like everyone else?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClark had a bunch of eyeballs fall on him,\u201d D.A. said.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s pretty weird.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat Monster does that?\u201d Scooter asked.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all thinking it\u2019s Monsters, right?\u201d James asked. \u201cThe slime, at least?\u00a0 I mean, the real slime. Not the food they\u2019ve been serving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnless you\u2019ve got a better idea than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bat vomit,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Catherine-Lucille said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOk, but if\u2026if it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monsters,\u201d Clark said slowly, trying to work out something that didn\u2019t feel right. \u201cWhy would they choose cabins, and campers, with Stuffies?\u00a0 Which they did, for at least two of them.\u00a0 You would think they would stay <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from kids who were protected by Stuffies. And attack someone else. Someone undefended.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHmm,\u201d Catherine-Lucille narrowed her eyes and tapped her tooth in thought.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s an extremely good point.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaybe their methods and motives are changing. Like, I heard that some of the Monsters are evolving,\u201d James said.\u00a0 \u201cLike, they\u2019re figuring out how to get through phones and stuff. To travel to the other side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNope,\u201d Saneema shook her head, refusing to believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine-Lucille shrugged. \u201cKinda makes sense. Kids don\u2019t play with toys as much as they used to cause of video games.\u00a0 What a great place for Monsters to slip in, to take up the space left behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNothing wrong with video games,\u201d Scooter said.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s room for both them <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmen,\u201d D.A. said with feeling.\u00a0 They tapped knuckles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOk but there\u2019s no video games here,\u201d Saneema pointed out. \u201cWhat does that even have to do with anything?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just saying,\u201d James said, \u201cmaybe the whole Monster situation is changing.\u00a0 How much do we really <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know, anyway?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know that Monsters attack kids, and Stuffies keep them away.\u201d Catherine-Lucille said.\u00a0 \u201cI mean, that\u2019s pretty basic.\u00a0 So why aren\u2019t these Stuffies keeping them away?\u00a0 Why are they\u2026<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attracting<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, what if their targets weren\u2019t the kids?\u201d Clark asked.\u00a0 \u201cWhat if\u2026it\u2019s the Stuffies themselves?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silence fell.\u00a0 Everyone looked at him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy?\u201d Catherine-Lucille asked.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t saying it meanly or disagreeing: she was grim, but curious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Clark said, shrugging.\u00a0 \u201cBut no campers have gotten sick as far as we know, right? Or started acting weird?\u00a0 Just all those counselors and \u2026adults.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight!\u00a0 So the Monsters aren\u2019t succeeding in whatever it is they\u2019re trying to do,\u201d Saneema said. \u201cBecause the Stuffies killed them, right? Isn\u2019t all that slime dead Monster stuff?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot necessarily; some Monsters always leave traces, they shed stuff from their world.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you can track them sometimes,\u201d Catherine-Lucille said. \u201cBut let\u2019s say Monsters <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed by the Stuffies\u2026The Stuffies were then found and taken away.\u00a0 No more Stuffies to guard that kid, or that cabin.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo in a sense, the Monsters <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accomplish something.\u00a0 If they were targeting Stuffies, I mean.\u00a0 They got them removed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Saneema said, picking up a twig and throwing it down in disgust.\u00a0 \u201cCamp is being invaded by Monsters.\u00a0 Clever ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll right, all right, look, this is exactly what we\u2019re here for, soldiers,\u201d Catherine-Lucille said, seeing the looks of fear and defeat on their faces.\u00a0 \u201cSure we help protect the occasional vulnerable Stuffy-less camper by making Stuffies for them. And sometimes we lend a hand to complicated problems like Clark\u2019s last year\u2026. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the real deal.\u00a0 Camp <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being invaded, or Haunted.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWorse yet, some of us are going home this Friday and some of us are going on the camping trip.\u00a0 Camp will be completely abandoned and even more vulnerable over the weekend.\u00a0 When we get back, it will be a total disaster\u2014a total Monster fest.\u00a0 And totally unsafe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t the counselors stay here?\u201d Clark asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James laughed.\u00a0 \u201cHeck no.\u00a0 Everyone spends their paychecks in town, or goes to the movies, or the pizza place\u2014some even go home, although that\u2019s frowned on.\u00a0 This place is like a ghost town.\u00a0 Even Miz Shirley disappears to take care of her gardens and birdfeeders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo how do we stop the Monsters?\u201d Saneema asked.\u00a0 \u201cEspecially if none of us are here on Saturday and Sunday?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, we can start by figuring out how they\u2019re getting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> camp,\u201d Catherine-Lucille said.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of nowhere.\u00a0 Monsters usually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that.\u00a0 They like being around people they can torture and feed on.\u00a0 There\u2019s no scary bedrooms here, and we keep all our stuff under the bunks.\u00a0 There\u2019s no basements or attics for them to hide in.\u00a0 So where are they, and how are they getting here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to keep our eyes and ears open, listen at doors when the counselors are talking.\u00a0 We need to make sure every weird incident is reported to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">us.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 First. So we can see if there\u2019s a pattern or something.\u00a0 We need to find every potentially scary location at the camp.\u00a0 Dark, deserted, dismal\u2014Monster spots.\u00a0 We need to ID them and set up guards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd we need.\u00a0 To make.\u00a0 More.
