Moxie meets A Knight’s Tale as Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Working as a wench—i.e. waitress—at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.
Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval—if they don’t get fired first.

Sometimes I don’t have a whole lot to say about books, so I’ve created Rapid Fire Reviews as a quick and fun way to get my opinion out without repeating myself and boring you! Here we go!

did i like it?

favorite character?

Kit, probably. Or Will. Actually, make that definitely Will.

will i re-read it?

YES! probably soon, actually…

three words to describe the book

feminism, determination, friendship

quick thoughts

fun fact about me: I minored in Medieval Studies in college! so I was SO FREAKING EXCITED when I heard about this book, and I really loved all the historical tidbits interspersed in the story! I also really, really loved Jamie’s portrayal of poverty, and what it’s like to be poor and have rich friends who mean well, but don’t always… get it.

I just love this cover so much! From the peach pattern to the illustrated characters to the tagline and the blurbs and the parentheses around medieval, I love it all! I nominated it for best cover of 2020 on both the *book shimmy* awards and the Bookish Jazz awards, but sadly it didn’t make it through.

11/10 stars!!!

  • A Shot at Normal by Marisa Reichardt
  • Late to the Party by Kelly Quindlen
  • Most Likely by Sarah Watson
  • Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan
