Mini Challenge: Vague Recollections | April 6, 2019

Posted April 6, 2019 by Kaity in Giveaways, Readathon / 123 Comments

Welcome to my mini-challenge!

Congrats to Tarissa @ In The Bookcase!

While you’re here, take a look at the giveaway I’m hosting for a copy of Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan!

I had so much fun hosting this challenge last year that I’m back with it again! If you want to read the story of how I came up with this idea, keep reading! Otherwise, turn to page 24 go down to where it says Part One and follow the instructions!

Fun fact: I work at a library. Technically, I work in the Children’s Room at a fairly large library. We frequently have patrons come in and ask about “that book, you know, where the main character did stuff and the cover was red, I think? Or maybe blue?” Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love helping people finding what they’re looking for, and decoding an extremely vague description like that -and finding the right book!- is an amazing feeling. And today you get to feel like that too!

This challenge will have two parts. For Part One, please leave a comment describing the book you’re currently reading (or your favorite book, or the book next to you, etc.) as vaguely as possible. Describe the cover if you like, or some plot points, or maybe just tell me what you think it’s called (even if you’re totally wrong). Try and be as vague as possible. Bonus bragging points for anyone who describes a popular book that stumps people. Here are a few examples to show you what I mean:

Example 1: You know, it’s that book with the people and stuff. There’s a school, and friends, and a necklace. I think the cover has a girl on it?

Example 2: I have a lot of friends who liked this book and I want to read it, too. I think there was a mountain or like a volcano or something? And they talked about food a lot. Sometimes there was dancing, or maybe just singing.

Example 3: I swear this was a movie or a tv show or… something? Something about a play, and there were those people that were in love maybe? The cover was definitely red. I think.

Click on the spoiler for the answer to the examples!

For Part Two, please comment on someone else’s description with what you think the book is. See how many you can get right and remember to have fun!

Complete Part One AND Part Two between 8am EST on April 6 and 8am EST on April 7 for a chance to win a gift card to Amazon (or if Amazon doesn’t ship to you, Book Depository!)!

  1. Lara M Maynard

Orange cover, weird title with something about music, set somewhere in the Southern US, woman author.

  2. I’ll give you one I was so proud of myself for figuring out when a student asked me to help her remember what book she’d read over the summer. “There were kids who could fly, and it turned out that their dad wasn’t really their dad…or maybe he was their dad? Something like that.”

  3. Colleen B

It’s one with a boy, and an evil woman and a villain. There’s also a bird on some copies of the cover.

  4. Jill L

It’s about love, biases, preconceived notions and people who really need to mind their own business!

  5. Marta M

The one about a man who wakes up from a coma or something? I think there are trees in the title

  6. Simone C

This book has a cover with an item of clothing or something on it? Maybe a dress or something? The title looks kinda bloody or written in blood or something. I think it’s about this girl that ends up in this weird place with some weird people and creatures and a potion called PermaSmile or something.

  7. Brittney Cray

The one that’s kinda like a gay man’s Eat, Pray, Love. I think it won an award…?

  8. A bunch of Asian people lament not getting their favorite table at a restaurant, meanwhile someone has a miscarriage…all sorts of issues arise, but lots of laughs, too.

  9. Amy W

It’s a book about a guy who wakes up and things are different. Something about a chandelier. Art. Notebooks.

  10. Jamie E

It’s a book that involves a family. You might have to be insane to read it. Or is it to survive it? I think there was a child’s toy on the cover…

  11. Katja Nielsen

You know that book with the female mc? Who thinks a lot? I think it might be old, or maybe not that old, I’m not sure. I think it has something with a heart in it.

  12. Mya

Three young ladies and their mother are forced from their family home because their jerk of a half-brother gets all their inheritance, he goes back on their father’s dying wishes, taking the women’s home from them. The ladies then move into a small cottage in the country.

  13. Matt

It’s that big one. First in its series. It’s about magic and battles and dragons. Tyrion isn’t in it.

  14. Julianne

So the cover is red. It definitely might have something to do with a haunted house. Maybe somebody’s watching them? But maybe it’s just me watching.

  15. Danielle

There’s a girl on the cover and she’s wearing like armor…or maybe a mech suit? And there’s magic, but like, magic is evil.

  16. It’s that book where the girl goes to that place, her name is a month, I think? Anyway, it’s the second book in that series and she goes Below!

  17. Maria

The one where a boy taking care of a sheep, or maybe a pig, loses his pet and makes friends with royalty while searching for it.

  18. Deb Nance at Readerbuzz

Here is mine: “It’s the book by that author…the one with the hard name…the name that kinda sounds like a common name….That author wrote another book…you know it…lots of people liked it…that book was sort of like this one….What else can I tell you? I think the stories in both books are about things that really happened…even though I don’t think most people ever heard about those things until they read the books….But I don’t want her first book…I want her second book…at least I think it’s her second book….It will definitely be the second book of hers that I’ve read. It’s pretty sad and it takes place, like her first book, during the war. Can you find that book for me?”

  19. Flauscheohr

This book is like a scavanger hunt…it starts in one country, then boom! they are somewhere else. That Italian Renaissance guy gets mentioned a lot, the one with the funny hat. I think this book has been made into a movie, too.

  20. Ann Cox

One I got on the reference desk: it’s a series about a girl with a Roman name, and her mother is dead. I think she goes to school in Canada?

  21. Lily

It’s about some beautiful dude that has a painting of himself, but the painting is like really ugly.

  22. I heard about this book. It has a number in the title? And it has something to do with Shakespeare but in the future. Oh, and I think part of the cover is green.

  23. Angie

Can you help me find that really scary book? I think it was by that old guy, who’s been writing for a long time….You know it’s about that place and stuff happens all the time. I’m sure you’ve read it.
