Review of Everless by Sara Holland

Posted September 21, 2018 by Kaity in Book Review / 0 Comments

One of my favorite things about reading is that occasionally I’ll guess some of what’s about to happen correctly, but then I still end up being wrong about enough of it to be completely surprised when everything ties together. That’s what happened with Everless, and the book was 123x better because of it.

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.

No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.

But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.

The Good, The Bad, and The GIF

The Good: The plot twists were crazy! I loved trying to figure out who everyone was and what was going on (because there was a LOT!) The whole book gave me kind of a The Cruel Prince vibe, especially Liam. Ina is such a sweetheart, and I enjoyed the friendship between her, Jules, and Caro. I can’t wait to see how the relationships develop in book two!

The Bad: Not sure if this was on purpose or not, but Roan’s characterization was a little lacking for me. I felt suspicious of him right up until View Spoiler » It could totally have been a thing where I was projecting Locke onto him (see note about the whole thing reminding me of The Cruel Prince), and I was just expecting him to be evil because of that, but there was also… Bea? I think? Who said he was a snake and I really wanted a follow up on that and WE DIDN’T GET ONE.

Judging a Book by its Cover

This cover is SO GOOD. It’s almost certainly why I decided I needed to read it in the first place, but it’s honestly been so long that I don’t remember. I love the hourglass, the crown, and the dark background. 8/10

Read Alikes

For more timey-wimey stuff, read Timekeeper by Tara Sim

For more crazy plot twists, read Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson

For more girls in castles seeking revenge, read Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

The Sorting Hat

As always, I’m using the system created by Sorting Hat Chats for this! For more information on what I’m talking about, click here.

Jules: Primary Ravenclaw, Secondary Hufflepuff

Jules’ primary motivation for doing things in this book is that she has to know why things happened the way they did. She needs the knowledge in order to work out how she feels about it, which is basically the definition of a Ravenclaw Primary.

The way she does things, though, that’s a Hufflepuff Secondary. I think the best evidence of this is actually spoken by View Spoiler » when she says “And worse, you always have help.” The way she says it makes it seem like the worst thing you could possibly do is be kind to others and have that work out for you. I can’t wait to see what book two does with this!

We don’t really get enough of anyone else in this book to be sure, but hopefully my review for book two will have a sorting of Liam!

Spoilers Sweetie

I thought for most of the book (okay, right up until I was proven wrong) that View Spoiler », so I was ONE HUNDRED PERCENT thrown when it was View Spoiler »

View Spoiler » is such a great twist! I loved how it kind of foreshadowed it when View Spoiler » (okay, maybe that’s not foreshadowing so much as something that got me thinking), but now I’m SUPER WORRIED something terrible is going to happen to View Spoiler »!

ONE LAST THING. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED that View Spoiler »The fact that we were given at least partial answers right there in the beginning but View Spoiler » I just brushed past it is just ?!?!?!?!?!
