Home economics is supposed to be an easy A for Ellie Agresti, but, much like an imperfect souffle, her plans collapse epically when she's dumped by her boyfriend, Hunter. Now Ellie has to mend her broken heart while watching Hunter fawn all over his new girlfriend, Brynn, in class. To make matters worse, Ellie is partnered with four of the biggest misfit guys in school: Jeremy, the loudmouth with temper issues; Isaiah, the solemn, silent horse racing obsessive; Andrew, who can't take rejection; and Luke, the giant, tattooed stunt biker.
Over the course of a semester, Ellie works to overcome her feelings for Hunter, as well as deeper insecurities that have plagued her since middle school. As the weeks go by, she's surprised to find friendships in unexpected places... and sparks flying with the last guy she'd expect.

What would you do if you spent the day with Ellie? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

We’d probably grab lunch at the Italian restaurant where her father works as a chef, meet up with her BFF Jodie for a high school football game, and since Ellie loves all things meteorology-related, we’d probably end up watching one of those “extreme” weather shows.

If Ellie were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

I can see Ellie getting along really well with Lara Jean from the To All the Boys series. They’re both introspective and learning to grow and take risks, and both have sweet, supportive families. Ellie would probably also commiserate with Jessica Darling, from the Sloppy Firsts series, because she, too, is feeling a bit abandoned and trying to figure out who her real friends are.

Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? And what would your powers and name be?

I can’t tell if it would be more stressful to be a hero or a villain! Heroes are always on-call and villains always have to live in fear of being caught – you don’t get a moment’s peace with either! But I’d choose to be a superhero, and since I used to be a fact-checker in my day job, I’d be like a fact-checker on steroids who always knows when someone is spreading misinformation on social media and fixes each post or comment to be factually correct. Maybe I’d be called something like Tweet Chex!

If you were trapped on a tropical island and you could choose 3 books to take with you, which 3 would you choose?

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, Just As Long As We’re Together by Judy Blume, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

In an earlier draft, I had a scene where the home ec group is working on an assignment at Ellie’s house, and Ellie’s new-agey mom reads everyone’s tarot cards. I looked up all these cards and their meanings, but, alas, it was all for naught because that part got cut in the name of word count!

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from The Secret Recipe for Moving On?

There’s a little moment when Ellie and the guys are at the racetrack, where they pass a radio station DJ playing Bohemian Rhapsody. A.J. rocks out on air guitar and the DJ gives him a radio station bumper sticker, which A.J. wears on his chest for the rest of his day. I loved writing that part 11 years ago and it STILL makes me smile.
