Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices. So it’s not exactly a surprise when he’s kicked out of the elite Ellis Station Academy in less than twenty-four hours.

But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy. Nax and three other washouts escape—barely—but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonization. And the perfect scapegoats.

On the run and framed for atrocities they didn’t commit, Nax and his fellow failures execute a dangerous heist to spread the truth about what happened at the Academy.

They may not be “Academy material,” and they may not get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight.

Review

The Good, The Bad, and The GIF

The Good: Everything? Everything. The characters, the found (and re-found) family, THE LOVE TRIANGLE (and no, I don’t think I’ve ever said that before), just everything was PERFECT. I especially loved how seamlessly the ~diversity~ was written. Much like Anger is a Gift, it didn’t feel out of place or stilted, it just flowed. Because that’s how the real world is. Also, the cover. HOT DAMN. I think this may be one of my favorite books of 2018. And I’m SO EXCITED that everyone gets to read it now!!!

The Bad: This is not really a bad thing about the book so much as a not so great thing about me reading this book, but I wish I had read it faster. I think it would be much more enjoyable as a one or two sitting book instead of a stretched out over almost a month book. So to everyone reading this- block off a day or two to sit down and devour this book!

The GIF:

Judging a Book by its Cover

This cover is my FAVORITE cover of 2018!!! I voted for it in the first round of the *Book Shimmy* Awards, but it didn’t make it to the next round. 🙁 You can also find it on my Top Ten Tuesday Favorite Covers of 2018 post! Basically, it’s perfect and I love it. Ten out of five stars.

Read Alikes

For more queer scifi, read We Are the Ants by Shaun David Huchinson

For more teen space thrillers, read This Splintered Silence by Kayla Olson

For more space operas set in the future, read Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

The Sorting Hat

As always, I’m using the system created by Sorting Hat Chats for this! For more information on what I’m talking about, click here. Today’s character is…

Nax: Oh sweet baby Nax. I love my Slytherin Primary, Gryffindor Secondary mess of a main character.

Fiercely loyal and ambitious, Nax’s Slytherin Primary is most obvious in his love of flying, despite the consequences, View Spoiler ». His Gryffindor Secondary is what I would sort him as if I was only using one house, because his reckless bravery is his most defining characteristic. His humor is his second most defining characteristic, and that’s definitely why I love him.

I LOVE how realistic the relationship between View Spoiler »

Also, to elaborate on the LOVE TRIANGLE, View Spoiler » but that’s what fanfic is for, I guess.

Let’s Discuss

Who would you want to be stuck in space with if you were branded as a criminal and running for your life? Personally, I would prefer a group of strangers so that (at least at first) I could worry more about everyone’s survival than whomever I knew that was with me. Let me know your answer in the comments!

About the Author

M.K. England is an author and YA librarian living who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls the mountains of Virginia home. When she’s not writing or librarianing, MK can be found drowning in fandom, going to conventions, rolling dice at the gaming table, climbing on things in the woods, or feeding her video game addiction. She loves Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. It’s best if you never speak of Sherlock Holmes in her presence. You’ll regret it.

Her debut YA space opera, THE DISASTERS, will be out on 12/18/18 from HarperTeen. For the latest DISASTERS news, you can subscribe to the Eccentric Orbit monthly newsletter at biy.ly/MKEnews.
