Saskia returns to Ivory Hall to train in bone magic, determined to use her time there to figure out how to stop Latham once and for all. With the help of her friends, she tracks down Latham's workshop and finds a vast collection of horrors, including the bones he stole from Gran. Latham has broken them on purpose to replicate the split paths Saskia experienced. But he isn't trying to control the future like she thought.
He's trying to change the past.
Saskia didn't think it was possible. Her gran always taught her that the past was a rigid, unchangeable thing, but she remembers Latham's ominous statement before he killed her mother: with enough power, anything can be altered. And it seems Latham has all the power he needs.

If you could trade lives with any YA character for a day, who would it be and why? What about a week? A month, year, or forever?

Oh, this is a tough one! If it were only for a day, I’d probably choose Seraphina from Rachel Hartman’s amazing YA fantasy of the same name because it would be AMAZING to be a dragon just for a little while. But if I had to trade lives with any other character for longer than that, I’d run away screaming. YA characters get in far too many dangerous situations for my liking. I’m only brave when telling stories, but I’d be curled up in a corner sobbing if I had to live in one.

What would you do if you spent the day with Saskia or Latham? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

If I had a whole day with Saskia, I’d spend the entire time resisting the urge to ask for a Third Sight bone reading. Even though it would be unwise, the temptation to find out every detail about my future would be immense. And if I spent the day with Latham, it would most definitely be against my will, so I’d spend every moment trying to escape. There would be no relaxing with either of these two!

If Saskia and Latham were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?

I think Saskia would love Nina from SIX OF CROWS, and I could definitely see Latham trying to strike up a romance with Queen Levana from THE LUNAR CHRONICLES.

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

Names are really important when I first start a book because a character doesn’t start feeling real for me until they have a name that feels exactly right. I spend a lot of time at the beginning of a new project on naming my characters. I usually end up scouring online lists of baby names and trying out favorites (anyone peeking at my search history would be convinced I’m perpetually expecting!). The moment I saw the name Saskia, I knew it was perfect. It’s hard to explain why—it’s kind of a gut feeling thing—but maybe it’s because it’s a name with just the right blend of feminine and fierce.

Can you share some things that we might not know about your characters?

Just one! They are about to be pushed to their limits in THE BONE THIEF, and they are definitely not ready!
