The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. She always did love the tale of Robin Hood.
Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain. She’ll help Bacchus fix unruly spells around his estate if he doesn’t turn her in. Working together, Elsie’s trust in—and fondness for—the handsome stranger grows. So does her trepidation about the rise in the murders of wizards and the theft of the spellbooks their bodies leave behind.
For a rogue spellbreaker like Elsie, there’s so much to learn about her powers, her family, the intriguing Bacchus, and the untold dangers shadowing every step of a journey she’s destined to complete. But will she uncover the mystery before it’s too late to save everything she loves?

If you could trade lives with any book character for a day, who would it be and why? What about a week? A month, year, or forever?

Ha! My gut reaction was Nynaeve from The Wheel of Time series just so I could be married to Lan Mandragoran. XD He’s my ultimate book crush.

Trading lives… that’s a tough question, because some characters have amazing abilities and such, but then a ton of conflict comes with them. Or they don’t have flushing toilets. Being Yeine from The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms could be really interesting for a month. I don’t think I’d mind being Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle, either.

What would you do if you spent the day with Elsie and Bacchus? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

Oh man, that would be nuts! I’d make Bacchus perform lots of magical feats for me just so I could see them. I LOVE England, and there’s so much of it I haven’t seen yet, so we would definitely hit up the town(s) and see all there was to see. If I only had a day, there would be NO RELAXING. Only CASTLES AND THINGS.

I’d also probably try on a corset.

If Elsie and Bacchus were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

What a great question! My mind immediately goes to Ceony and Emery from The Paper Magician series. I have this inkling that Bacchus wouldn’t like Emery much at first, but they’d warm up to one another. And Ceony would easily convince Elsie to do many brash things. Elsie undoubtedly would bond to something. I could see her being a Smelter.

Honestly, they’d probably go out to dinner at some nice but reclusive place and then just chat the rest of day, save for when Ceony teaches Elsie how to ride a bicycle. Hmmm… yes, they’re so boring, aren’t they? XD Maybe I should put them in a room with Maekallus or Rone instead…

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

Oh man. Overall, not specifically for Spellbreaker, I loved researching side-saddles and Regency underwear and how scandalous it really would be for a woman to ride astride, ha! I’ve also researched mid-Victorian hairstyles for another book and I really just . . . hate them. XD I refuse to be historically accurate with hair. Just . . . no.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Spellbreaker?

My favorite scene from Spellbreaker is from just past the halfway point, where (trying to avoid spoilers), Elsie and Bacchus find themselves with a temporal aspector and Bacchus has to disrobe. (I’m smiling so hard right now.) I love writing awkward romance-beats like that.

What Books Would You Recommend to Elsie and Bacchus?

I think Elsie would like Margaret Rogerson’s A Sorcery of Thorns, and I’d give Bacchus The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.

…and then make them read all of my books. 😉
