Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries series is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.
When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.

What would you do if you spent the day with Lizzie and Darcy? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

If I were to spend the day with Lizzie and Darcy, I sincerely doubt that they would let me relax because they are go-getters who find a mystery in anything! Whatever we do, Lizzie would want to go somewhere where she could people-watch, and Darcy would have to be dragged along grudgingly, but we could convince him to enjoy himself as long as we provided snacks. (Darcy and I are very alike in this manner.)

If Lizzie and Darcy were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

One of my favorite duos in YA historical mystery are Mary and James from Y.S. Lee’s The Agency series, and even though Mary and James live in Victorian London and Lizzie and Darcy in the Regency period, I think they’d get along splendidly! Between the four of them, they could probably solve a mystery in twenty pages.

Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? And what would your powers and name be?

If I could have any super power, I think I’d want to have the power of invisibility. That way I could sneak into all the buildings and fancy houses that I’ve always been curious about from the outside and no one would have to know. That sounds kind of like super villain behavior, but I’d definitely want to be good. Only, you know. Invisible. I’d want to be an invisible superhero that people never got to see and only speculated about!

If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?

Ooh, that’s a good question! I think perhaps I’d put in a journal of my writing because I think it would be fun to re-read many years in the future, my childhood library card because it holds lots of memories, and…maybe my COVID vaccination card? Because that definitely will one day hold some historical significance!

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

I had a lot of fun looking up real legal cases from the early 1800’s (in many instances you can read the transcripts, which aren’t 100% perfect, but give you a feel for various crimes that were occurring at the time and how people recounted them). There were so many great details from those transcripts that I would have loved to stuff in the novel, including one about a goat that kept getting stolen by different people.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Pride and Premeditation?

My favorite scene is a moment about three quarters into the book where Lizzie and Darcy find themselves locked in a storage room together! It was my editor’s suggestion to nudge them together, and I believe she said something to the effect of “they need to be locked in a room together to figure out their feelings” and let’s just say I took that note very literally…

About Tirzah Price

Tirzah Price grew up on a farm in Michigan, where she read every book she could get her hands on and never outgrew her love for YA fiction. She holds an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and is a former bookseller and librarian. Now, she’s a contributing editor at Book Riot, where she can be found recommending books on the site, newsletters, podcasts, and social media accounts. When she’s not writing, reading, or thinking about YA books, she splits her time between experimenting in the kitchen and knitting enough socks to last the fierce Michigan winters.

  1. I really enjoyed it! It was fun to revisit the P&P characters but put them in a new situation. I look forward to more in the series so I haven’t read any other Austen novels so I won’t be as familiar.
