Bestselling author Laurie Faria Stolarz returns with Jane Anonymous, a gripping tale of a seventeen-year-old girl’s kidnapping and her struggle to fit back into her life after she escapes.
Then, “Jane” was just your typical 17-year-old in a typical New England suburb getting ready to start her senior year. She had a part-time job she enjoyed, an awesome best friend, overbearing but loving parents, and a crush on a boy who was taking her to see her favorite band. She never would’ve imagined that in her town where nothing ever happens, a series of small coincidences would lead to a devastating turn of events that would forever change her life.
Now, it’s been three months since “Jane” escaped captivity and returned home. Three months of being that girl who was kidnapped, the girl who was held by a “monster.” Three months of writing down everything she remembered from those seven months locked up in that stark white room. But, what if everything you thought you knew―everything you thought you experienced―turned out to be a lie?

How would you describe your childhood?

Mostly idyllic. My mom worked from home, taking care of me, organizing playgroups and bringing me to parks. When I was in school, she started volunteering for the deaf school in the next town over. My mom knows sign language and would regularly teach craft classes there – knitting, sewing, crocheting, weaving, etc. Growing up, while my mom was ever-present, my dad worked pretty much around the clock. Looking back, that was normal, but now I wonder if it might’ve been a symptom of something missing. Aside from that, I’ve always had a handful of friends, and a best friend, Shayla, who was more like a sister.

Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?

I used to be a half-full person, but things changed after I got back from captivity. Now, I have to work really hard at optimism. I have to remind myself the glass is the way it is for a reason – to teach me some lesson. This mindset isn’t easy, but it’s something I strive for. I’m a work in progress.

What was your favorite book growing up?

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Scared, broken, but still hopeful

What three words would others use to describe you?

Damaged, depressed, disappointing
