Sixteen-year-old Nate is a GEM—Genetically Engineered Medi-tissue created by the scientists of Gathos City as a cure for the elite from the fatal lung rot ravaging the population. As a child, he was smuggled out of the laboratory where he was held captive and into the Withers—a quarantined, lawless region. Nate manages to survive by using his engineering skills to become a Tinker, fixing broken tech in exchange for food or a safe place to sleep. When he meets Reed, a kind and fiercely protective boy that makes his heart race, and his misfit gang of scavengers, Nate finds the family he’s always longed for—even if he can’t risk telling them what he is.
But Gathos created a genetic failsafe in their GEMs—a flaw that causes their health to rapidly deteriorate as they age unless they are regularly dosed with medication controlled by Gathos City. As Nate’s health declines, his hard-won freedom is put in jeopardy. Violence erupts across the Withers, his illegal supply of medicine is cut off, and a vicious attack on Reed threatens to expose his secret. With time running out, Nate is left with only two options: work for a shadowy terrorist organization that has the means to keep him alive, or stay — and die — with the boy he loves.

What would you do if you spent the day with Nate? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

I would take Nate out for dim sum. He loves dumplings of all kinds. Then I might try to get him to relax in a hammock. If he’s capable of relaxing. I’m really not sure. I also think he’d really love LEGOLAND.

If Nate were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

This is a great question! I really had to think about it. Nate loves his found family, but he’d be slow to warm up to others. But I think he’d really get along with Wylan from Six of Crows. They’re both small but fierce.

Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? And what would your powers and name be?

I’d rather be a misunderstood superhero who some people consider to be a supervillain. My power would be causing people to feel feelings. I’d have a name like Empathica or Feelatron.

If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?

A pop socket to memorialize this weird era of cell phone obsession, one of my enamel pins to memorialize how much I’m into enamel pins right now, and a thumb drive full of photos from the year.

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

This is a great question, too! I did a lot of research into faerie lore and didn’t use any of it when I rewrote the book as more science-fantasy than urban fantasy. I enjoyed researching fae weaknesses and affinities especially.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Fragile Remedy?

My favorite scene is when Nate goes to Alden to borrow the diffuser. Alden’s emotions are raw to the reader, but not as clear to Nate, who is lost in his own fear. I love and hate how much both of them are suffering in that moment.
