Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ...

Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep.

But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.

When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.

A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom ...

Do you have a favorite scene, quote, or moment from Beyond the Black Door?

Since I have a few favorite scenes, I’ll try for the least spoilery. I’m pretty partial to when Kamai goes beyond the black door for the first time and meets Vehyn, just because there’s been a lot of buildup to that moment, and also I just love describing the … uh … scenery.

What is something that we might not know about your main characters?

I think (I hope!) a lot of people know that Kamai is asexual, but she’s also demi-biromantic, meaning she can become romantically attracted to any gender after she’s formed a bond with them.

(Note from Kait: in case you’re wondering, this is what drew me to this amazing sounding book in the first place!)

Give us the elevator pitch for Beyond the Black Door!

It’s about a girl who can walk through people’s souls as if they were houses, and the black door that follows her from soul to soul that she’s never supposed to open—but of course she does, unleashing something dark on the world.

How do you feel about LGBTQIA+ rep in your work and how important is it to you to write diverse characters and storylines?

The LGBTQIA+ rep is my favorite part of my work. It’s incredibly important to me to include it since there aren’t a lot of books that reflect my own experience, and as a bonus, I hope I’m able to reflect someone else’s, as well!

What are some TV shows, movies, and books that would pair well with your book?

I’m not so good with TV shows, but I’ll take a stab at the others!

Movies: LabyrinthPhantom of the Opera

Books: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge and Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan for YA and Uprooted by Naomi Novik and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin for adults.

Which of your characters do you identify the most with and why?

Probably Kamai, for her queerness, and for her slightly morbid and danger-loving side.

AdriAnne Strickland was a bibliophile who wanted to be an author before she knew what either of those words meant. She shares a home base in Alaska with her husband, her pugs, and her piles and piles of books. She loves traveling, dancing, vests, tattoos, and every shade of teal in existence, but especially the darker ones. She is the coauthor of SHADOW RUN and SHADOW CALL (Delacorte/PenguinRandom House) and author of the forthcoming BEYOND THE BLACK DOOR(Imprint/Macmillan).
